FGCU heads west to battle No. 21 USC

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball shifts its focus toward PAC-12 foe and No. 21 USC Friday at 10 p.m. in Los Angeles, California.

USC opened the season with a Top-10 win over No. 6 Ohio State, 83-74. Friday's battle will mark the first-ever meeting between the Trojans and the Eagles. The game will air on USC Live Stream.

FGCU produced a 22-point victory for its season-opening win at Brown on Monday, winning 80-58. Three Eagles reached double figures in the win. As a team, FGCU knocked down 16 3-pointers.

Uju Ezeudu exploded for a double-double, dropping a team-leading 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Ezeudu connected on 4-of-8 from behind-the-arc.

FGCU has proved its worth well outside of the ASUN with 23 Power Five wins in its program history, 10 in the last six seasons (since 2017). The Eagles are 2-4 all-time against current members of the PAC-12 with wins over Washington State (2023 NCAA Tournament) and Arizona (2015).

The Eagles have also notched six Top 25 wins with its highest-ever ranked win coming against No. 15 Missouri in the First Round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament.

Entering the 2023-24 season, head coach Karl Smesko has directed FGCU to 147 wins over the past five seasons, ranking fifth most among all active Division I women's basketball head coaches. In that span, Smesko trailed Connecticut's Geno Auriemma and 2023 National Champion Louisiana State's Kim Mulkey by just six wins.

The Green & Blue has led the nation in made 3s per game for four consecutive seasons and began the campaign ranked No. 2 overall in the CollegeInsider.com's mid major top 25 poll.

FGCU closed last season ranked No. 24 overall in the final USA Today/Coaches Top 25 poll. The Eagles are the only mid-major program with four straight Top 25 rankings.
