FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer is heading to Lubbock, Texas, to play No. 2 seed Texas Tech University in the First Round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.
The Red Raiders are ranked No. 4 in the country, posted a 15-1-4 overall record and an 8-0-2 mark in the Big 12 Conference. Texas Tech reached the Big 12 semifinals and defeated two Top 25 teams throughout its campaign, No. 14 Texas 2-1 and No. 23 TCU 1-0. Friday will mark the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Eagles are 1-7 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and will be making their eighth tournament appearance in program history. In 2015, FGCU toppled USF 2-1 in the First Round before falling to No. 3 Duke in the Second Round.
FGCU pulled off a dramatic, three-goal comeback Sunday in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship against North Alabama in Nashville, Tennessee, tying the game 3-3 and advancing 3-2 on penalty kicks to punch its ticket back to the NCAA Tournament.
The Green & Blue won its eighth ASUN Tournament title Sunday under 17-year head coach Jim Blankenship, going back-to-back for the first time since the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Women's soccer also propelled FGCU Athletics to the century mark in total ASUN Championships with 100.
With just 27 minutes left to play in the championship, FGCU stared down a mighty 3-0 deficit, the largest deficit the Eagles have faced this season. Enter Erika Zschuppe to the rescue.
Zschuppe kept fighting and put the Eagles on her back to produce a hat trick performance, scoring in the 64th, the 66th and the 78th minute to tie the match at 3-3, forcing overtime and then penalty kicks to decide a champion. Zschuppe is just the sixth Eagle ever to record a hat trick.
Zschuppe, Ashley Labbe and Katelyn Kauffman each stepped in the box and drilled successful attempts. FGCU led 3-2 heading into the fifth frame as the final Lions shot sailed over the crossbar to send the Eagles into a frenzy.
