FORT MYERS, Fla. - For the second week in a row, Florida Gulf Coast University will have a men's basketball game featured on television as the Eagles travel to face the University of Pittsburgh on the ACC network Monday night at 7 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Last Tuesday, the Eagles played a spirited contest on the Big Ten Network against the University of Indiana. FGCU got 19 points from
Zach Anderson and 17 from
Dallion Johnson, with the Eagles stunning the Assembly Hall crowd by taking a 48-42 lead with just under 11 minutes to go. The Hoosiers would rally back to take a 10-point lead, but FGCU rallied again to pull within two with 35 seconds left. The Eagles would have a chance to tie, but the shot from distance would go off the iron and Indiana would hit three free-throws to eventually win 69-63.
The Eagles opened Alico Arena for the season last Friday against Ave Maria University and found themselves in a dogfight against a 5-0 team from the NAIA ranks. The Gyrenes shot 50 3-pointers in the game, hitting on 15. Ave Maria would hold a 58-51 lead with just over 14 minutes to go, but FGCU answered with a 13-0 run to take the lead. With the score tied at 71-all,
Keeshawn Kellman scored five consecutive points for the Eagles to spark a game-ending 9-0 run, giving FGCU head coach Patrick Chambers the win in the home opener, 80-71.
Monday night's contest will mark the first time FGCU and Pitt have met on the hardwood since Dec. 30, 2014. The Panthers won that contest 71-54 in Peterson Events Center.
FGCU will head for tropical climates for their next three games, taking a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam. The Eagles will open with Missouri State Friday night at 9 p.m.
