FORT MYERS, Fla. -
Courtney Glotzbach had 15 kills and ASUN Defensive Player of the Week
Reese Burry had 27 digs as Florida Gulf Coast University ran its win streak to nine with a 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-11, 15-8) win over Florida International University in volleyball action at Alico Arena Tuesday night.
"That was a difficult match and one that could have gotten away from us had the players not stayed poised," said FGCU head coach
Matt Botsford. "Of course I would have liked to have seen a cleaner brand of volleyball, especially considering the level we played at Saturday, but I do think we learned some important things."
All 15 of Glotzbach's kills came in the final three sets, including a perfect 11-for-11 performance over the final two sets. "The performance by Courtney was a game changer and she put us on her back for large stretches of time," Coach Botsford said. "I was really impressed by how she found a way to influence what was happening out there."
It was during the fourth set that the Eagles (16-5) went on a 16-0 run, almost all of which came during
Claire Ertel's serve. She also had three important serves as part of a 4-0 run in the final set that helped put the match away. "Claire was outstanding from the service line," Coach Botsford said. "That pressure was really important in sets four and five."
Burry set a new season-high in digs with her 27. She also tied her season-high with seven assists in the win. Ertel had nine digs for FGCU, with
Skylar English falling one dig shy of a double-double at 14 kills and nine digs.
Shelby Kent was the third Eagle with nine digs, chipping in nine kills to the offense as well.
In addition to being the ninth win in a row for the Eagles, it was also the 13th consecutive win for the Eagles over FIU (9-13), dating back to 2012.
The Eagles will return to Atlantic Sun Conference action this Friday at Bellarmine. First serve in Louisville, Ky., is set for 6 p.m.
