FGCU keeps streak going with win at Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Shelby Kent had 16 kills and Lily Tessier converted a double-double with 34 assists and 10 digs as Florida Gulf Coast University defeated Bellarmine University 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 28-26) Friday night in Atlantic Sun Conference action from Knights Hall.

The Eagles (17-5, 9-0 ASUN) ran their winning streak up to 10 with the win, as nine of those wins have come in conference play. Five of the wins in the streak have been sweeps while the other five have come in five-set affairs.

A run in the latter stages of the first set would push the Eagles to a comfortable win in the stanza. The Eagles kept the momentum in the second frame; however, in the third set, Bellarmine (8-13, 6-3 ASUN) used the early momentum to its favor, building a lead as high as five late, 23-18.

The Eagles would roar back with five straight points to tie the set, four of which came on Tessier's serve. Juliana Lentz had two of her six kills in the match during the run as FGCU would make it 23-all. BU earned a crack at set point, but a Skylar English kill sent it by the wayside. FGCU continued to tilt momentum in its favor, earning a match point attempt on Kent's 15th kill of the night. BU fought off the first try, but Kent put her team on the doorstep of the win with her final kill of the evening. BU wouldn't return the final serve of the match over the net, handing the win to the guests.

Reigning ASUN Defensive Player of the Week Reese Burry lived up to the moniker again with a 19 dig performance. As a unit, FGCU's serve reception was immaculate as the Eagles did not give up a service ace in the match.

English finished the night with 12 points thanks to six kills, five aces, and a pair of block assists.

FGCU will travel to face Eastern Kentucky University Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Richmond. The Colonels defeated Stetson University in four sets Friday night.
