RICHMOND, Ky. -
Katharina Oelschlaeger netted her fourth goal of the season as Florida Gulf Coast University played to a 1-1 draw with Eastern Kentucky University Sunday afternoon in Atlantic Sun Conference women's soccer play.
The draw, combined with a University of Central Arkansas victory at North Florida Sunday afternoon, knocks the Eagles into third place in the ASUN regular season standings. The Eagles must beat Stetson this Saturday and hope for a UCA loss to North Alabama in order to take over the second spot in the ASUN standings and earn a double-bye in the ASUN Championship.
Oeschlaeger's goal was set up after the Eagles (9-4-4, 6-1-3 ASUN) earned possession in their offensive half of the field.
Kendal Gargiula fed the ball from the center of the pitch 30 yards from goal out to the left wing and
Ashley Labbe. Labbe slid a pass towards a streaking Oelschlaeger near the top of the six-yard box. The junior midfielder left-footed the ball along the ground and past the EKU keeper to give the Eagles the lead in the 29th minute.
EKU (4-8-5, 3-3-4 ASUN) would equalize 39th minute on a goal by Rachel Robinson on a shot from 25-yards out. The Colonels had an opportunity to take the lead within the final two minutes after a handball in the box was called on the Eagles, but the penalty attempt sailed well high.
The home side had the best opportunity to break the deadlock via a 66th minute corner kick, but the ensuing shot hit the crossbar and stayed out. The Eagles would manage one shot on target in the second half to two for EKU.
FGCU wraps up the regular season this Saturday at Stetson. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
