DELAND, Fla. - A strike in the first half from
Kendal Gargiula and a tally in the second half from
Courtney Corcoran were enough for Florida Gulf Coast University to earn a 2-0 win over Stetson University in Atlantic Sun Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (10-4-4, 7-1-3 ASUN) finish the regular season tied for second in the ASUN standings with the University of Central Arkansas with 24 points; however, UCA earns the No. 2 seed into the ASUN Championship by virtue of a win in the regular season over FGCU. The Eagles will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed and will face the winner of Thursday afternoon's contest at Pickering Field between Kennesaw State University and Austin Peay State University.
FGCU peppered the net to the tune of eight shots in the first 45 minutes, but it was Gargiula that scored the breakthrough in the 20th minute. The sophomore scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season as she finished off a pass from
Erika Zschuppe to make it 1-0. For Zschuppe, it marked her team-best eighth assist.
The score stayed the same until the 73rd minute when Corcoran scored her first goal in an Eagles jersey.
Katharina Oelschlaeger was credited with the assist as the Eagles doubled their lead to 2-0.
Olivia Molina earned another clean sheet in net, her ninth of the season. The freshman ends the regular season with 99 saves on her ledger.
FGCU's quarterfinal contest in the ASUN Championship is set for Oct. 29, at 1 p.m.
