FGCU stays unbeaten in ASUN with Stetson sweep

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Shelby Kent had 15 kills with a single error to help Florida Gulf Coast University defeat Stetson University 3-0 (31-29, 25-13, 25-23) in Atlantic Sun Conference volleyball action Friday night in Alico Arena.

Kent didn't commit an attack error until late in the third set, falling just one kill shy of tying her career-high. Alexandra Zakutney led all attackers with 16 kills while adding 12 digs for a double-double. Lily Tessier averaged 15 assists per set with her 45 on the night, with Reese Burry adding a match-high 14 digs.

"That was a great start to the weekend, and I'm happy to see our offense continue to grow," said FGCU head coach Matt Botsford. "Lily did a great job of utilizing our hitters and putting them in good spots to be effective. I really liked the decision making by those attackers."

The first set was the wildest of the night, with both teams fighting off set point opportunities of the other. On the seventh set point between the two teams combined, a Stetson (8-9, 3-2 ASUN) attack error gave the Eagles the set, 31-29.

FGCU (12-5, 5-0 ASUN) rolled through the second set thanks in part to five consecutive kills by Courtney Glotzbach. The Green & Blue had 19 kills in the set, holding the Hatters to just four as a team.

"Courtney was a nice spark at the end of that first set, and she carried that that energy throughout and provided a nice threat behind," Coach Botsford said.

The final set would be tight, with a Stetson error giving the Eagles a crack at match point. On the next rally, the final attack of the night from the guests landed long, giving the Eagles the win.

FGCU will be back in action Saturday as the Eagles welcome the University of Central Arkansas to Alico Arena. First serve on Dig Pink Night is set for 6 p.m.
