FORT MYERS, Fla. – For the second straight season, FGCU women's basketball junior guard Kierstan Bell (Alliance, Ohio) has been named the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year as announced by Her Hoops Stats today. Bell becomes the first player in the award's history to earn the honor in back-to-back seasons.
 
"To repeat as the winner of a major award is very special. There were so many outstanding mid-major players this season," said head coach Karl Smesko. "We are so proud of Kierstan for her accomplishments and wish her all the best as she prepares for the WNBA Draft."
 
Following the season, Bell was also again named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Associated Press, the WBCA, and the USBWA. She declared early for the WNBA Draft and will be one of several players invited to be in attendance on Monday, April 11 in New York as she is predicted to be a first round selection.
 
One of the most decorated players in program history, Bell helped the Eagles reach the NCAA Tournament Second Round after a thrilling win over fifth-seed/No. 16 ranked Virginia Tech in the first round. The Green and Blue also claimed both the ASUN Regular-Season and ASUN Tournament Championship titles en route to a 30-3 overall record.
 
Bell, who also won the award in 2021, averaged 23.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 2.1 steals, and 1.9 blocks per game (all stats against Division I only). Since the 2009-10 season, that combination has not been accomplished by any other player. 
On a per-minute basis, Bell was among the most efficient players in the country. Her Player Efficiency Rating (PER) of 38.7 ranks ninth in Division I, while her 0.40 Win Shares per 40 minutes ranks 30th. The junior guard's 31.1 points per 40 minutes played ranks first in the nation.

Bell's usage rate of 38.0% led the nation, while her 1.02 points per play ranks 111th in the country. Since 2009-10, Bell is one of just three players to post a usage rate of at least 38.0% while averaging at least 1.0 points per play with 500 or more minutes played.

Bell transferred to FGCU after her freshman year playing for Ohio State after being recruited as the No. 8 player in ESPN's 2019 class rankings. Prior to her collegiate career, Bell became the first three-time recipient of Ms. Basketball in Ohio, joining LeBron James as the only other player to be named Ms. or Mr. Basketball three times in the state.

Award Eligibility
To be eligible for the award, players must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be "mid-major." The following conferences are considered high-major for the purposes of this award, and thus ineligible: ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC. Players are selected based on their on-court production in the 2021-22 NCAA season.

About Becky Hammon
Hammon was a three-time All-American during her career at Colorado State and led the Rams to the Sweet 16 in 1999, the program's only appearance to date. She was signed by the New York Liberty in 1999 and traded to the San Antonio Stars in 2007, where she played the rest of her career.  Hammon retired in 2014 as a six-time All-Star and a two-time All-WNBA First Team honoree. In 2016 she was named one of the top 20 players in WNBA history and was recently named to the W25. 
Hammon became the second female coach in NBA history when she began coaching for the San Antonio Spurs in 2014. Additionally, Hammon is the only woman to be a head coach in the NBA Summer League as well as the only woman to be a member of an NBA All-Star coaching staff. Currently, Hammon is the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces.

COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko maintains a record of 610-128 (.826) overall in his career, which is the third-highest winning percentage among active Division I coaches behind only UConn's Geno Auriemma and LSU's Kim Mulkey. He has also led the Eagles to a 232-18 (.930) mark in ASUN regular season play and a 30-2 (.933) record in ASUN tournament play. Over the previous 10 seasons, he has guided FGCU to a 153-5 (.968) record in conference play with six undefeated seasons. The 12-time ASUN Coach of the Year has led the program to 12-straight 25-win seasons and 18-consecutive 20-win campaigns, including 30-plus wins in five of the last eight years. On top of all that, the Eagles are 549-101 (.845) all-time since Smesko started the program in the 2002-03 season, and the Green and Blue's .845 all-time winning percentage is the best in NCAA Division I women's basketball history.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 90 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 14+ seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just 10 seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 44 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including women's basketball (No. 20, 2021-22), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2022) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 25 consecutive semesters. The past five semesters (Fall 2019 – Fall 2021) each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA in each. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
