DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the sixth time in the first seven games of the 2022 season, the FGCU baseball team scored in double figures as they cruised to a 16-2 victory over Bethune-Cookman, Saturday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Eagles improve to 5-2 on the season while the Wildcats fall to 1-5.
"We will continue to ride our offense as long as we can," said head coach
Dave Tollett. "When you score 16 runs in a game, it should be an easy win and tonight it was as we also got a great start from
Tyler Shuck. It is not just one guy who is carrying the offense either, we've got multiple guys who are feeling good at the plate right now."
Freshman
Harrison Povey (Indian Rocks Beach, Fla./Largo HS) accounted for nearly half the runs tonight as he went 4-for-5 with two home runs, seven RBI, and four runs scored. His seven RBI is tied for the fourth-most in school history for a single game.
Sophomore
Ian Farrow (Merritt Island, Fla./Merritt Island HS) and junior
Joe Kinker (North Port, Fla./Venice HS) each drove in three runs as well on the night while sophomore
Mac Moise (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida Baker HS) and graduate student
Bobby Head (Winter Garden, Fla./West Orange HS/Austin Peay) each scored three runs.
On the mound, senior
Tyler Shuck (Cape Coral, Fla./Canterbury HS) was fantastic, throwing six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts while allowing just two hits and one walk.
The game started slow as both teams were held off the board in the first three innings, but the Eagles would not be held down for long as they scored four in the fourth. Sophomore
Trevor Kole (Parkland, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons HS) in his first start of the season got the Eagles on the board with a single before redshirt-junior
Brian Ellis (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) added a run on a groundout. Farrow and Kinker then followed with a single and double, respectively, to add two more runs.
After a scoreless fifth, the Eagles put up multiple runs in the final four innings. In the sixth, Kinker connected on his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, to extend the Eagle lead to 6-0.
The seventh saw Povey's first home run of the night, also a two-run shot, to make it 8-0 before Farrow added an RBI single.
The Eagles reached double-figures in the eighth as Head drove in a run with a single. Povey followed with a two-run triple before Farrow added another run on a sacrifice fly.
Povey put the finishing touches on the game in the ninth as he hit a three-run home run, his second of the game and third of the season.
The Eagles will look for the sweep tomorrow as the two teams close out the series. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
