FORT MYERS, Fla. --- Jacksonville scored four first inning runs and never looked back in a 17-1 win over the FGCU baseball team inside Swanson Stadium on Sunday to win a best of three ASUN quarterfinal series.
Â
With the victory, Jacksonville (13-32) advances to the ASUN winner's bracket semifinals where they will compete against Liberty at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Harmon Stadium in Jacksonville. FGCU concludes its season at 28-20.
Â
"Jacksonville came out hot and punched us from the very first at bat," FGCU head coach
Dave Tollett said. "We struggled with our control and couldn't get anything going offensively."
Â
FGCU's lone run came on a fielder's choice groundout from
Alejandro Figueredo with the bases loaded in the first inning. Outside of that, the Eagles managed just four hits, highlighted by a leadoff double from
Cameron Krzeminski in the second and a two-out double from
Stephen Wilmer in the third.
Â
Wilmer (2-for-4) was the lone Eagle with multiple hits, while
Joe Kinker drew three walks in four plate appearances.
Â
Meanwhile, the visiting Dolphins chased FGCU's starter,
Ronaldo Gallo (L, 1-2), after six batters. After their four-run first, they added single runs in the second and third before putting the game away with a five-run fourth. Impressively, they did all their damage with just three extra base hits as they tallied 15 singles, 11 walks and four hit batters.
Â
On the mound, the Eagles used eight pitchers with all but one pitching 1 1/3 innings or fewer. The longest outing came from
Mason Miller, who allowed two hits, three runs (two earned) and three walks over three innings. As a staff, FGCU also had three wild pitches.
Â
Jacksonville's Mike Cassala improved to 3-4 on the season with the win. In seven innings, he allowed five hits, one run and two walks while striking out three. At the plate, he also went 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBI from the cleanup spot.
