FORT MYERS, Fla. --- The FGCU baseball team suffered a 7-5 setback to Stetson inside Swanson Stadium on Sunday as the visiting Hatters used a four-run sixth inning to complete a comeback victory.
Â
With the outcome, both teams now have identical records at 22-14 overall and 8-4 in ASUN play. The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday in Coral Gables with a non-conference tilt at Miami before returning home next weekend for a series against North Florida.
Â
"It was a big series," FGCU head coach
Dave Tollett said. "They were better than us this weekend. That's all there is to it. There's no other way to cut it. We had chances. They had chances. They capitalized on opportunities, and we didn't. It's back to work for us. There's still six games to play in this league. I've seen us go from fourth to first in two weeks. We'll get back to work and keep grinding."
Â
The Eagles scored all five of their runs in an explosive first inning after Stetson took an early 1-0 lead off FGCU starter
Ronaldo Gallo, who ultimately earned a no decision.
Stephen Wilmer gave the Green and Blue the lead by taking a 1-2 pitch off the wall in right center for a two-run double, which extended his hitting streak to 11. After a walk byÂ
Alejandro Figueredo,
Ian Farrow started a four-hit day with a three-run blast over the fence in right center on an 0-2 pitch for a 5-1 lead.
Â
Following that, though, FGCU managed just five singles and three walks over the final eight innings while stranding eight runners. Farrow (4-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) had over half of the Green and Blue's seven hits while
Brian Ellis went 1-for-2 with three walks and a run from the leadoff spot.
Â
After entering in relief following FGCU's five-run outburst, Stetson's Jovan Gill (4-2) held the Eagles scoreless over the next 15 outs to pick up the victory as the Hatters added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings off Gallo.
Joey Mugavero (4-1), who relieved Gallo for the final out in the fifth, took the loss after allowing the game's final four runs in the sixth.
Â
Hunter McGarry provided solid relief for the Eagles by holding Stetson scoreless over the final 3.2 innings while giving up just three hits and walking none. On the flip side, Danny Garcia picked up his seventh save for the Hatters with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Â
Notes
With North Florida's win over Jacksonville on Sunday, there is now a three-way tie at the top of the conference's south division standings between FGCU, Stetson and UNF. The Eagles have six games remaining in ASUN play, split evenly between UNF and Jacksonville.
Â
Farrow's four-hit game was his season-high as the rookie also notched his second home run.
