ATLANTA – Following his dominant performance against No. 21 FAU, FGCU baseball (7-3) senior
Mason Studstill (Titusville, Fla./Rockledge HS/Miami/Eastern Florida State) has been named the ASUN Pitcher of the Week. This is the first career honor for the right-handed starter, who collected his first win of the year during the team's
8-0 victory over the Owls (March 5).
"What an honor for Mason," head coach
Dave Tollett said. "We are really proud of him for being honored, but we are not surprised because of his performance. Mason is known for being a bulldog on the mound and he was exactly that during Friday night's game. It was one of his best starts ever and one of the better performances I've seen this anyone on this team have in a while. Mason is a special guy, both as a player and a leader."
The ASUN Preseason Pitcher of the Year tossed 8.0 scoreless frames during his start against the Owls, scattering a pair of hits and issuing just three walks. In addition to fanning nine batters, he at one point had a streak of retiring seven-straight. The outstanding start, paired with a 1-2-3 ninth inning for junior
Tyler Shuck (Cape Coral, Fla./Canterbury HS) handed FAU its first shutout of the 2021 season, despite entering the night with the seventh-best scoring offense in the nation.
With a 1.33 ERA, Studstill leads everyone on the staff that has tossed at least 12.0 frames. His 20 punchouts pace the Green & Blue arms and he has held opponents to a .194 batting average so far.
Studstill is the first Eagle pitcher to be honored since Evan Lumbert, who was tabbed during the 2019 season after the team's win against No. 5 Florida. He shares this week's league accolades with Kennesaw State's Alex Carballo, who was selected as the ASUN Player of the Week.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 84 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 13 seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 38 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women's basketball (No. 24, 2019-20) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate (APR) in their sport and have had the highest percentage of teams so honored from these two groups over each of the past three years. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.46 GPA in the classroom in the spring 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 22 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall and 2020 Spring semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
