Â
FORT MYERS, Fla. – After a hot shooting first half in a road win at Florida A&M, the FGCU men's basketball team closes out the week with a trip to Robert Morris on Saturday night at UPMC Arena. The game is slated for a 7 PM tip and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Â
The Eagles are off to their third-best start in program history at 8-3 overall, while the Colonials are 1-7 on the year after Wednesday night's win over Lancaster Bible.
Â
On Tuesday night,
Tavian Dunn-Martin scored a game-high 23 points to lead FGCU to a 69-55 win against the Rattlers. The ASUN's leading scorer had 17 of his points in the first 10 minutes alone as the Green and Blue shot a blistering 57.1 percent in the first half. That was highlighted by hitting 10-of-19 three pointers before halftime.
Â
The 8-3 start to the year for the Eagles is the best since opening 9-2 during the 2014-15 campaign. It's tied with the 2005-06 and 2006-07 teams as the third-best start in program history. The best start to a season remains with the 2003-04 squad which opened the year 14-0.
Â
The bulk of the success this year came during a five-game win streak during the week of Thanksgiving. The Eagles are also 7-1 at home though their two road losses did come at Loyola Chicago which advanced to the Sweet 16 last year and at FIU which is currently 8-1 on the year.
FGCU enters the weekend ranked No. 161 in the NCAA RPI/NET Rankings – over 100 points higher than last season's final NET ranking of 286 for the Eagles in the abbreviated season. That puts FGCU second among ASUN teams with Liberty the top league team at No. 116 followed by Lipscomb (No. 180), and Jacksonville (No. 195). In last year's first NET Ranking, only Liberty (No. 70) and FGCU (No. 197) were among the top 200 teams.
Â
Robert Morris snapped an 0-7 start to the year with the 99-51 win over Lancaster Bible. This will be just the third game of the year for the Colonials. The game was originally slated to be played last season but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This will be the second all-time meeting between the two teams as RMU won 64-59 at Alico Arena in 2019.
Â
Through 11 games this year, FGCU is averaging 78.0 points while giving up 69.5 per game. The Eagles are shooting 45.5 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from deep. FGCU ranks second in the league in scoring, second in scoring margin (+8.5), first in blocked shots (5.1), and second in made three-pointers (120, 10.9/game), while also leading the league in assists (179, 16.3/game).
Â
The Green and Blue is led byÂ
Dunn-Martin andÂ
Cyrus Largie who are averaging 18.3 and 13.3 points per game, respectively.Â
Kevin Samuel is averaging just under a double-double with 9.7 points and a team-best 8.3 rebounds, while adding 31 blocks.
Â
Robert Morris is averaging 69.5 points per game while giving up 76.8 points per night. Three Colonials are scoring in double figures led by 14.3 points per game from Kam Farris. Kahliel Spear and Rasheem Dunn are next at 12.9 and 12.1 points, respectively. Spear is also averaging a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game. Jaron Williams and Justin Winston are each averaging just under 10 points a night as well to round out the RMU leaders.
