Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Balanced Scoring Leads Men’s Hoops Past Eckerd 99-59

Six players reach double figures highlighted by 15 from Dakota Rivers and Zach Anderson.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Led by 15 points from Dakota Rivers (Windermere, Fla./Windermere HS) and Zach Anderson (Apopka, Fla./Apopka HS), six players reached double-figure scoring as the FGCU men's basketball team picked up a 99-59 win over Eckerd on Sunday evening in Alico Arena. The win improved the Eagles to 2-2 overall, while the Tritons fell to 1-3 on the year.

The six players in double-digit points marked the first time for that to occur since the Jan. 29, 2018 game against North Florida.

"I thought we shared the ball well with the 27 assists and took care of possession. We stress both of those with the team and tonight we had just nine turnovers," said head coach Michael Fly. "The offensive rebounding and how that led to second chance points was also a positive sign. There are still a lot of things we need to clean up, but overall we moved the ball well and, for the most part, the guys gave really good efforts."

Along with Rivers and Anderson, Tavian Dunn-Martin (Huntington, W.Va./Huntington HS/Akron/Duquesne) scored 13 points, Cyrus Largie (Miramar, Fla./Mater Lakes Academy) had 12 points, and Andre Weir (Hollywood, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna Prep/Richmond) and Kevin Samuel [Codrington Village, Barbuda/Redemption HS (Texas)/TCU] added 11 each. For Anderson and Weir, both totals stood as career highs. Samuel nearly had a double-double with nine rebounds while adding two blocks. Luis Rolon (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Central Pointe Christian Academy) added eight assists to lead all players.

Eckerd was led by 19 points from Daniel Love, while Atraiel Washigton scored 11 points and GianFranco Grafals had 10 points.

FGCU shot 48.8 percent from the field highlighted by 27 assists on 39 made field goals. The Eagles also held a 53-to-29 advantage on the boards which helped translate into 23 second chance points and 28 fast break points.

The Green and Blue carried a 47-27 lead into the intermission before building the lead to as many as 47 points in with 5:35 remaining in the second half. A trio of triples from Anderson along with five points from Dunn-Martin sparked a 14-to-0 run in a nearly three minute stretch that was key in pushing the lead to 90-43.

In the final three minutes of play, Kyle Riemenschneider (Fort Myers, Fla. / Fort Myers HS) hit a pair of field goals, the first points of his career, around a three-pointer from Lenny Ricca (Weston, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) to give the final score.

The Eagles will have a quick turnaround as they host Rhode Island on Tuesday night (7 PM, ESPN+). The upcoming week will also feature the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Invitational on Friday, Nov. 26 through Sunday, Nov. 28. Each day will feature a pair of games with the Eagles playing at 7 PM on Friday and Saturday and at 6 PM on Sunday.
