ATLANTA -
Keri Jewett-Giles and
Tytionia Adderly were named the ASUN's player and defensive player of the year, respectively, while
Nasrin Ulel was named second-team all-conference as the ASUN announced its postseason women's basketball awards this afternoon.
Karl Smesko also earned his 10th career ASUN Coach of the Year award.
Â
Jewett-Giles (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar HS) is in the midst of a career-best season. While leading the No. 24 Eagles to a 28-3 record entering Saturday's ASUN quarterfinal game against Lipscomb, the senior is averaging a career-best 16.7 PPG along with 3.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.9 steals per game while being named a national semifinalist for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year award by Her Hoop Stats. In ASUN play alone, she finished second in scoring at 17.6 per contest and tallied seven games with 20+ points.
Â
"Keri has had a tremendous senior season," FGCU head coach
Karl Smesko said. "She is an explosive offensive player who has all the tools. She is also a very good defender who makes a lot of plays. Hopefully, she has another outstanding conference tournament."
Â
Jewett-Giles is the highest-scoring two-year transfer in program history with 927 points in just under two years at FGCU, and she's eclipsed the 1,400-point plateau for her NCAA career. Carrying a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, she produced a career-high 35 points against LSU this year and broke the program's ASUN regular season single-season total scoring and scoring average records.
Â
The Fort Myers native is also on pace to break FGCU's career and single-season scoring average record, is one of just three players in the program's Division I era to record a 500-point season with 518 and needs 52 points to break program's D-I era single-season record currently held by Kaneisha Atwater (569, 2015-16). In ASUN play alone, she finished sixth in assists/game and led the ASUN in steals/game (2.9). She ranks among the top 15 active players nationally in career steals and is among the top 50 in career assists.
Â
Adderly (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) becomes the program's first-ever back-to-back ASUN defensive player of the year. She is the only player in ASUN history with at least 800 points, 1,000 rebounds, 300 assists and 200 steals in a career, and she ranks second in conference history in career rebounds with 1,159. She has 14 career double-doubles and holds every career, single-season and single-game rebound record in program history. Furthermore, she is one of just two players (Courtney Chihil) in program history to rank among the top five in career rebounds, assists and steals.
Â
"Ty is a special talent," Smesko said. "She is one of the best rebounders in ASUN history. She is an elite defender who can guard just about anyone. She is a great ball handler and passer. And she has worked very hard to develop a consistent 3-point shot."
Â
This year, the senior forward has a career-high 313 rebounds, which re-broke her own single-season program record. She is on pace to be the first player in program history to average 10+ rebounds per game in a season (10.1) and is averaging 7.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.1 steals this year. In conference play alone, she led all players in rebounds (10.5/game), finished second in steals/game (2.2) and assist/turnover ratio (1.9), tied for fourth in assists/game (3.6), was sixth in 3-point FGs made/game (1.8) and finished 12th in 3-point FG percentage (.387).
Â
Adderly finished just two total points shy of averaging a double-double in ASUN play alone (9.9 PPG, 10.5 RPG). She leads FGCU in rebounds and assists and is second in steals, and she has produced 53 career games with 10+ rebounds, including 14 this year. She has notched three of the four highest single-game rebound totals in program history this year alone - 21 vs Stetson on Feb. 10, 19 vs UNF on Feb. 8 and 18 vs North Alabama on Feb. 29, and she has 16 of FGCU's 26 highest single-game rebound totals in her career. Overall, she ranks fourth nationally among active D-I players in career rebounds and is in the top 20 active players nationally in career rebounding average.
Â
Ulel (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta HS) was named to the ASUN's all-conference team for the second consecutive season after capturing first team recognition last year. She is averaging 13 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game. In ASUN play alone, she finished 10th in scoring (13.4/game), tied for first in 3-point FGs made/game (2.1) and finished 13th in 3-point FG percentage (.386).
Â
"Nasrin battle through an early season finger injury on her shooting hand which limited her effectiveness in the non-conference portion of the season," Smesko said. "In conference, she has played great. She is a great shooter and scorer who is also a very good defender."
Â
The senior guard tied FGCU's D-I era single-game scoring record with 36 points in a road win over Jacksonville and is currently third on FGCU's career scoring list with 1,326. She produced the highest scoring two-game stretch in program history (69 points) with 36 vs Jacksonville on Feb. 3 and 33 vs North Florida on Feb. 8, and she has 17 games with at least 10+ points this year. She ranks 11th in ASUN history in career 3-point FGs attempted and is four 3-pointers shy of moving into the top 10 in 3-point FGs made.
Smesko, meanwhile, captured his 10th ASUN Coach of the Year award in 13 seasons. This year, he led the Eagles to the program's 10th regular season conference championship with a 15-1 conference record and a 28-3 overall record. The team has spent the past six weeks ranked in the top-25 of the USA Today Coaches Poll, and he has led FGCU to 10-consecutive 25-win seasons, an accomplishment matched only by UConn and Baylor.

COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko led the 2018-19 Eagles to the program's fifth undefeated conference regular season since 2011-12, as well as the ninth consecutive season with at least 25 victories. The Green and Blue finished 28-5 overall and 16-0 in ASUN play, capturing the team's ninth ASUN regular season championship and sixth ASUN tournament championship. The team finished the season receiving votes in the final AP Poll and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in eight seasons before falling to host No. 19 Miami in the first round. It was the team's 12th-straight postseason appearance in 12 years of Division-I existence - the only program to ever do such.
Over the past five seasons, Smesko has guided FGCU to three 30-plus win seasons while recording a 149-28 (.841) record overall. That win total ranks eighth-best in the nation over that stretch - the most among all mid-majors and ahead of programs such as Oregon State and Stanford. Including 2018-19, he has also guided the Eagles to 15-straight 20-win seasons.
Â
Smesko maintains a record of 552-122 (.819) overall in his career (third highest winning percentage among active D1 coaches behind only UConn's Geno Auriemma and Baylor's Kim Mulkey), including a 201-17 (.922) mark in ASUN play. Over the past eight+ seasons, including this year, he has guided FGCU to a 137-5 (.975) record in conference play with five undefeated seasons. The now nine-time ASUN Coach of the Year earned his 400th career coaching win in 2014-15 in just 493 career games, two games faster than Auriemma.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 81 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 12-plus seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just eight-plus seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 36 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women's basketball (2019-20) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.35 GPA in the classroom in the spring 2018 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for twenty-one consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall semester saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
