FORT MYERS, Fla. - Looking to make up ground in the back stretch of the ASUN race, the FGCU men's basketball team returns to Alico Arena on Thursday night to host Stetson as part of two home games this weekend. Tip-off is set for 7 PM with the game streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast on Fox Sports Radio.
After a big road win at Jacksonville last Thursday, the Eagles fell at Liberty, which is tied for the ASUN lead, on Saturday night. Junior
Jalen Warren (Milton, Ontario) earned ASUN Newcomer of the Week honors after averaging 19 points on the weekend - he had 18 points including the game-winner at Jacksonville before adding 20 points at Liberty. Sophomore
Caleb Catto led the Eagles in the win at Jacksonville with 20 points marking the third-straight 20-plus night for the guard - the first time an Eagle accomplished that since Brandon Goodwin in the 2017-18 season.
Following a tough non-conference slate, FGCU began to find its rhthym in the new year and the start of ASUN play. The Eagles won three of their first five including two straight at Stetson and over KSU. The Eagles fell into a tie for sixth after the loss at Liberty, however, with winnable games on the back half of the ASUN slate, FGCU can still make-up ground starting this week.
After a hot start to ASUN play, Catto has taken over as the team's leader in season scoring. He is now averaging 12.2 points per game overall and 15.2 points in league games which ranks seventh among the ASUN leaders.
Sophomore
Zach Scott (Miami, Fla.) is just behind Catto with 10.8 points per night. Along with
Jalen Warren's 10.3 points per outing, the trio's 798 combined points account for half of the team's 1,469 points.
Warren's 83 assists on the season are the second-most of any other player in the ASUN. Scott's name also pops up in the league rankings leading the ASUN in total steals (36).Â
As a team, the Eagles lead the league with an average of 3.9 blocks per game. Both freshman
Dakota Rivers (Windermere, Fla.) and junior
Justus Rainwater (Enumclaw, Wash.) have spearheaded that effort, combining for a total of 58 blocks, the most of any duo in the conference. Individually, Rivers ranks fourth in the league with 29 while Rainwater ranks sixth.Â
Stetson currently sits in second place in the league standings with a 6-3 mark in ASUN games - including a home win over defending champion Liberty. Rob Perry leads the Hatters with 15.8 points per game followed by Mahamadou Diawara's 12.9 points per game. Christiaan Jones is just behind at 9.3 points per night.
Series History vs. Stetson
• Heading into Thursday's game, the all-time series between FGCU and the Hatters favors the Eagles 21-8.
• That mark includes a 13-2 advantage at Alico Arena.
• The Eagles earned a 66-62 overtime victory over the Hatters earlier this season in DeLand (Jan. 11). Catto scored 19 points, while Warren had eight of his 16 points in overtime.
