CORAL GABLES, Fla. – At the end of a game in Coral Gables that saw 10 lead changes and as many ties, it was the FGCU men's basketball team (3-1) that came out on top, as the Eagles handed host Miami (3-1) a 66-62 loss at the Watsco Center on Saturday afternoon. Junior Caleb Catto (Cape Coral, Fla./Southwest Florida Christian Academy) led the team with 18 points and was joined in the double-digit scoring effort by both sophomore Dakota Rivers (Windermere, Fla./Windermere HS) and graduate student Eli Abaev (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Austin Peay), who put up 15 and 11, respectively.
FGCU will next return to Fort Myers to take on FIU in Alico Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 16. Tip-off against the Golden Panthers is set for 7 p.m. and the contest will be a white out.
"I'm so happy for our team, as this was a true example of taking the scouting report to the court," head coach Michael Fly said. "I felt like today we played up to our standard and I'm proud of the guys for how they executed the game plan and for sticking together. I thought our players did a great job of stepping up to sustain momentum at different points, whether a big offensive or defensive play, to keep things close throughout. We're going to enjoy this win today but what's more important is that we learn to build from how we played overall. We won the game today because we cut down our turnovers, we hit open shots, and we stuck to the game plan from start to finish."
The Eagles' 13 threes from Saturday's game tie for the 10th-most made in the program's single-game history. They are also the most that FGCU has ever made against a Power 5 opponent.
In addition to his 18 points, Catto hauled in three rebounds and contributed one assist. He shot 7-of-12 from the floor and finished the game with a 4-of-7 mark from long range. All 15 of Rivers' points came from beyond the arc and his two blocks put him at 44 for his career total, which ranks ninth all-time in program history. Abaev finished his day with a team-high nine boards and his three assists were bested by only freshman Luis Rolon's (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Central Pointe Christian Academy) eight. That number matches the total number of assists that the freshman had on the season heading into today's contest.
The first half saw both teams trading baskets and runs as the Eagles and the Hurricanes went into the break tied 28-28 thanks to a triple by Catto with 58 seconds to go capping a five-point burst to close the opening stanza. Catto's three-pointer marked the seventh for FGCU in the first, which tied the season high for any half of the year.
In the second half, the Eagles were able to take advantage of a slow offensive stretch for Miami and built up a 39-34 lead with 11:59 remaining. FGCU held the Hurricanes scoreless for a nearly four-minute stretch as Miami went 0-for-5 from the floor.
Catto's triple with 10:04 left in the second half gave FGCU its 10th three-pointer of the day and stretched the Eagles' lead to 42-38. Though never able to reclaim the advantage, Miami did continue to test the Eagles, as the game saw three ties in the last 10 minutes of play.
Rivers' shooting helped to put the game away for the Green & Blue, as the forward chipped in three treys over the course of the closing six minutes. During that stretch, the sophomore was nearly perfect from outside the arc, shooting 3-of-4 and pushing the Eagles' lead to as much as six.
A late jumper by Miami's Isaiah Wong, who tallied a game-high 20 points, brought the home team's deficit to as little as two, but sophomore Cyrus Largie (Miramar, Fla./Mater Lakes Academy) knocked down a pair of free throws to hand FGCU its final advantage.
"This was a huge win today because I think it shows what happens when everyone is bought into the game plan," Rivers said. "We came in with a must-win attitude, but our play was also impacted by doing all the little things right and having a gritty attitude. We've put in a lot of work in and it's really a blessing to see all of that come together. I think we're progressing every day and today was a huge leap forward in terms of play on the court."
The Eagles picked up their second-consecutive win over the Hurricanes, having downed Miami by a score of 63-51 during the historic 2012-13 season. It also marked the first time FGCU has won on the road in the series, which Miami now leads 3-2 overall.
Miami's scoring effort was led by the trio of Wong, Nysier Brooks (13) and Anthony Walker (12), as they put up 45 of the team's 62 total points. Brooks finished his day with a game-high 15 boards and also chipped in a pair of blocks, while Walker blocked three shots and added a steal.
Though the Eagles held a 13-3 advantage in three-point shots, the Hurricanes bested the visiting team in points in the paint, earning a 40-8 advantage. Both sides were fairly evenly matched in both bench points (FGCU 20, Miami 15) and second-chance points (Miami 15, FGCU 13).
