NCAA Weekly Whistle Series Episode 10 (Jan. 23, 2020)

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Coming off a tough loss last Saturday, the FGCU men's basketball team looks to get back on track in ASUN action with a two-game road weekend starting at Jacksonville on Thursday night. Tip-off is set for 7 PM and the game will be available on ESPN+ and Fox Sports Radio.

Despite sophomore Caleb Catto (Cape Coral, Fla.) scoring 21 points, his second straight 20-point game, the Eagles dropped a narrow 56-54 decision to NJIT last weekend at Alico Arena. FGCU had a chance to force overtime with a last second shot, but it was just off the mark at the buzzer.

Following a tough non-conference slate, FGCU began to find its rhythm in the new year and the start of ASUN play. The Eagles won three of their first five including two straight at Stetson and over KSU. Narrow losses at North Alabama and against NJIT hurt the Eagles dropping them into a tie for sixth with Jacksonville.

After a hot start to ASUN play, Catto has taken over as the team's leader in season scoring. He is now averaging 12.0 points per game overall and 15.4 points in league games.

Sophomore Zach Scott (Miami, Fla.) is just behind Catto with 10.9 points per night. Along with Jalen Warren's (Milton, Ontario) 9.5 points per outing, the trio's 710 combined points account for half of the team's 1,360 points.

Warren's 81 assists on the season are the second-most of any other player in the ASUN. Scott's name also pops up in the league rankings leading the ASUN in total steals (35).

As a team, the Eagles lead the league with an average of 4.0 blocks per game. Both freshman Dakota Rivers (Windermere, Fla.) and junior Justus Rainwater (Enumclaw, Wash.) have spearheaded that effort, combining for a total of 56 blocks, the most of any duo in the conference. Individually, Rainwater ranks 5th with 27, while Rivers is 4th (29) after blocking 5 shots against Kennesaw State.

Through seven ASUN games, Catto and Warren lead FGCU with 15.4 and 10.4 points per game, respectively.

Jacksonville enters the weekend with a 10-12 overall mark and a 3-4 record in ASUN action. The Dolphins have won back-to-back games with an overtime decision at Lipscomb followed by a win at Kennesaw State last weekend. David Bell leads Jacksonville with an 11.8 point per game average followed closely by Destin Barnes who averages 11.0 points per night. Bell is also averaging 10.3 rebounds per game.

Series History vs. Jacksonville
• Thursday's game will be the 26th meeting all-time between FGCU and Jacksonville. The Eagles hold a 14-11 record in the series having won six consecutive meetings.
• Last season, FGCU won 77-74 in Jacksonville and 73-60 in Fort Myers. All-time on the road, the Eagles are 5-7 vs. the Dolphins.
