FORT MYERS, Fla. - FGCU looks to win its third straight game on Saturday night as the men's basketball team heads to North Alabama to close out the Week Three slate of ASUN play.
After a thrilling 73-51 win over Kennesaw State which saw the Eagles give up a new program record for fewest points allowed in a first half (7), fewest made field goals in a half (1) and the lowest opponent shooting percentage in program history (.209), FGCU now faces the challenge of a one-day turn-around trip to UNA.Â
Following the tough non-conference slate, FGCU has begun to find its rhthym in the new year and the start of ASUN play. The Eagles have won three of their last four and two straight after an overtime win at Stetson and Thursday's victory over KSU.Â
Sophomore
Zach Scott (Miami, Fla.) continues to lead the Eagles in scoring this season with 11.2 points per night followed by 11.0 points for sophomore
Caleb Catto (Cape Coral, Fla.). Along with Warren's 9.5 points per outing, the trio's 633 combined points account for half of the team's 1,241 total points.
Warren's 73 assists on the season are the second-most of any other player in the ASUN. Scott's name also pops up in the league rankings leading the ASUN in total steals (30).Â
As a team, the Eagles lead the league with an average of 4.4 blocks per game. Both freshman
Dakota Rivers (Windermere, Fla.) and junior
Justus Rainwater (Enumclaw, Wash.) have spearheaded that effort, combining for a total of 55 blocks, the most of any duo in the conference. Individually, Rainwater ranks 5th with 27, while Rivers is 4th (28) after blocking 5 shots against Kennesaw State.Â
Through five ASUN games, Catto and Warren lead FGCU with 12.8 and 11.0 points per game, respectively.
After closing out their non-conference schedule with three straight loses, North Alabama is 2-3 to start ASUN play. The Lions had won six straight at home before losing two consecutive entering Saturday. Christian Agnew leads the Lions with 12.6 points while Jamari Blackmon is just behind with 11.9 points per game. Emanuel Littles is one of the top rebounders in the leaging with 9.5 boards per game to go with 7.3 points.
The Eagles won't have a Week 4 Thursday game but will host NJIT on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Alico Arena.
Series History vs. North Alabama
• Saturday will be just the fifth all-time meeting between FGCU and North Alabama which is now in its second season as a Division I program. The Lions hold a 3-1 advantage in the series though the teams split last year's series.
• FGCU won 71-64 last February at Alico Arena, while UNA took a 61-56 decision in Florence.Â
• The only other two meetings came during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons - both wins for North Alabama.
