Burnam's big match helps @FGCU_VB sweep George Washington, remain unbeaten

Coral Gables, Fla. - Snowy Burnam had a match-high 15 kills to lead the FGCU volleyball team (6-0) past George Washington (2-3) in the finale of the Hurricane Invitational at the University of Miami's Knight Complex on Saturday.

"Snowy was outstanding today in every facet of the game, and I loved how tuned in she was to what was happening out on the court," FGCU head coach Matt Botsford said. "Her attacking on the backside started to open things up for everyone else and her passing was a big difference maker."

With the win, the Eagles improved their Division I era record for most consecutive wins to start a season and pushed their regular season winning streak to 19. They'll be back in action next weekend in the Bluegrass Battle against Indiana, No. 12 Kentucky and Cleveland State.

Burnam (Palm City, Fla./Jensen Beach HS), who added five digs, three assists and two blocks along with her offensive production, was aided by Cortney VanLiew, who chipped in 13 kills, 10 digs and one ace. Amanda Carroll (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS), who eclipsed 1,400 career kills on Friday night, nabbed a season-high seven kills along with five digs and three aces.

"Today's performance was especially satisfying because we knew we were going to be pressed by GW's serving and blocking," Botsford said. "After a bit of a slow start, we found a nice rhythm with first contact, and Chelsey did a great job running the offense. GW has been playing some very good volleyball, so we also knew that one of the keys was going to be pressuring them from the service line. While the first set was a struggle in that regard, the team adjusted quickly and we were able to hit our spots, which allowed our defense to work."

The Eagles overcame 11 service errors overall and a first set that featured 14 ties and six lead changes to produce their third consecutive sweep and push the team's consecutive sets won streak to 11.

Defensively, Dana Axner (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman HS) had a match-high 11 digs and five assists, while Tori Morris (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam HS) had a match-high four blocks (one solo).

Chelsey Lockey (Eaton, Colo./Eaton HS) led all players with 34 assists and added eight digs, while Daniele Serrano (Sanford, Fla./Seminole HS), Burnam and VanLiew (Seymour, Ind./Columbus East HS) each added two block assists.

The Eagles hit .337 as a team, led by Burnam (.387), Carroll (.385) and VanLiew (.345), while improving to 2-0 all-time against George Washington, who was held to a .054 finish offensively.

Notes
VanLiew is now 14 kills shy of 900 in her career and needs 41 more to surpass Kaitlin Holm (926, 2011-13) for fourth place in the program's Division I era.

COACH BOTSFORD

Matt Botsford is in his sixth season as head coach of the FGCU women's volleyball program in 2019 after being hired on Feb. 10, 2014. In his tenure, Botsford-led teams have compiled a 122-45 (.731) record overall, including a 57-15 (.792) record in ASUN play. Including this past season, he has taken the program to heights it has not seen in the Division-I era (2007-present) – registering at least 20 wins overall in four straight seasons and at least 10 wins in conference play five straight seasons. Furthermore, the team's offensive efficiency has drastically improved since Botsford started. In his first two seasons, his squad produced hitting percentages of .212 and .220. The next two, which saw .267 and .256 percentages, are the third and fourth highest in program history. In 2018, he led the program to its first regular season championship since 2012 (fourth overall) and its first-ever ASUN tournament title, NCAA tournament appearance, NCAA tournament win and victory over a ranked team. His first two campaigns resulted in ASUN regular season runner-up finishes, and the following two saw the Eagles advance to the tournament championship. On Sept. 10, 2016, Botsford led his team to a five-set win over Indiana in Alico Arena, which signified the program's first-ever win over a team from a Power-5 conference. This past season, he led the team to a win over Miami (Fla.) - the program's first-ever road Power-5 win.
