VanLiew reaches 1,000 career kills as @FGCU_VB sweeps Lipscomb

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Cortney VanLiew had 22 kills to lead the FGCU volleyball team (12-3, 2-1 ASUN) to a 25-15, 25-21, 25-19 win over Lipscomb (5-8, 1-1) in Alico Arena on Sunday afternoon.

With her performance, the junior outside hitter became the fourth player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills. She reached the milestone with her first kill and joined Amanda Carroll (1,424, 2015-present), Brooke Youngquist Sweat (1,173, 2004-07) and Olivia Mesner (1,132, 2011-14) on the list.

"Cortney is amazing," FGCU head coach Matt Botsford said. "There's a bunch of superlatives you could use, but outside of the obvious statistical things that she does that doesn't show up is just what an amazing person she is. That's part of her success. She's hard working, diligent and wants to get better. She spent the last few days diving into film and trying to figure out how she can improve in her attacking and passing. That's really what sets her apart, and that's why the success comes to her."

VanLiew's (Seymour, Ind./Columbus East HS) 22 kills is the most in program history for a three-set match against a conference opponent. She topped her own record of 20 that was set on Sept. 22 of last season. In fact, those are the only two 20-plus kill performances in a three-set conference match.

Overall, the Eagles hit .366 for the match, while holding Lipscomb to a .154 percentage. Erin Shomaker had nine kills at a .529 clip to pace the team in hitting percentage, while VanLiew finished at .500. Daniele Serrano (6) and Tori Morris (5) also combined for 11 kills.

"I was really happy with our overall play," Botsford said. "I thought we blocked really well. I thought the floor defense, the way it was connected to the block, I thought we were getting some success in opportunities in transition. I'm really happy with (our play), especially the way sets ended for us. I thought we did a really good job at the end closing things out."

Once again, Chelsey Lockey facilitated the offense with a match-high 35 assists, while Dana Axner (3) and VanLiew (2) added five. The team had 18 total block assists, led by Serrano (Sanford, Fla./Seminole HS) with five. In fact, she also added the lone solo block, which pushes her career total in that category to 61 - just one shy of matching Olivia Mesner's program-best career tally set from 2011-14.

Morris (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam HS) and VanLiew added four and three block assists, respectively, while Axner (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman HS) led all players with 15 digs. VanLiew added six digs and Lockey had five, while Carroll and Snowy Burnam (Palm City, Fla./Jensen Beach HS) chipped in four apiece.

In the opening set, neither team led by more than two until the Eagles reeled off three straight to take a 12-8 lead. A pair of kills from Shomaker (Granville, Ohio/Granville HS) helped elevate the lead to seven, and a service ace from Carroll (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) made it 23-12. Despite three straight from Lipscomb, VanLiew finished off the set with her eighth kill of the match - while hitting .636.

In the second frame, Lockey (Eaton, Colo./Eaton HS) had 13 assists as FGCU opened the set with six of the first nine points. Lipscomb, though, responded to take an 11-9 lead, which forced a timeout, and the Eagles answered with a run of their own by reeling off six of the next eight to take a 15-13 lead.

The Bisons took the lead once again, at 17-16, but a 5-1 run capped by a kill from Shomaker made it 21-18 before VanLiew finished off the set once again with a kill moments later.

Lipscomb held three leads in the third set, including a 14-13 advantage, but FGCU scored eight of the next nine points to seize control of the set. During that run, VanLiew had a pair of kills, while Serrano had a kill and two block assists. Giovanna Borgiotti (Vienna, Va./George C. Marshall HS) and Morris then finished off the match with back-to-back kills.

COACH BOTSFORD

Matt Botsford is in his sixth season as head coach of the FGCU women's volleyball program in 2019 after being hired on Feb. 10, 2014. In his tenure, Botsford-led teams have compiled a 128-48 (.727) record overall, including a 59-16 (.787) record in ASUN play. Including this past season, he has taken the program to heights it has not seen in the Division-I era (2007-present) – registering at least 20 wins overall in four straight seasons and at least 10 wins in conference play five straight seasons. Furthermore, the team's offensive efficiency has drastically improved since Botsford started. In his first two seasons, his squad produced hitting percentages of .212 and .220. The next two, which saw .267 and .256 percentages, are the third and fourth highest in program history. In 2018, he led the program to its first regular season championship since 2012 (fourth overall) and its first-ever ASUN tournament title, NCAA tournament appearance, NCAA tournament win and victory over a ranked team. His first two campaigns resulted in ASUN regular season runner-up finishes, and the following two saw the Eagles advance to the tournament championship. On Sept. 10, 2016, Botsford led his team to a five-set win over Indiana in Alico Arena, which signified the program's first-ever win over a team from a Power-5 conference. This past season, he led the team to a win over Miami (Fla.) - the program's first-ever road Power-5 win.
