FORT MYERS, Fla. – The No. 12 FGCU men's soccer team (3-3-1) dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 13 UCF (4-1-1) Wednesday night at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
"Tonight was a comprehensive loss," said head coach
Jesse Cormier. "We didn't have the right type of mentality, attitude as a coaching staff and team. It's a defeat for all of us, not just the players. UCF had a better plan and executed it better along with their strong identity. I was proud of how we responded in the second half. We have to look at this loss, be humbled and be open to learning and getting ready for FAU next week."
UCF wasted no time getting on the board tacking on the first tally just three minutes into the game. FGCU had back-to-back shots in the 18th minute for a chance to equalize but
Shak Adams (Antioch, Tenn./Cane Ridge HS) and
Noah Bushey (Spokane, Wash./New Mexico) were both denied from close range inside the box. The Knights then bumped their lead up to three scoring six minutes apart in the 30th and 36th minute, both from All-American forward Cal Jennings.
Both squads were tied in shots (eight) heading into the break with FGCU putting four on target. Eagles held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Coming out of the intermission, FGCU struck quick as Adams netted his first goal of the season off a cross in the box from
O'Vonte Mullings (Toronto, Ontario/Northview Heights Secondary HS) in the 52nd minute. The goal moved Adams into sole possesion of second place all-time on the FGCU goals list. The Eagles continued to move forward, launching four more shots, two on net before UCF tacked on its fourth goal of the contest in the 74th minute.
Down the stretch, both clubs would play with 10 men as each side received a red card. All said FGCU out-shot UCF 18-11 (eight on frame) and had a 5-1 edge in corners. Keeper
Gustavo Vasconcelos (Recife, Brazil/Colegio GGE) secured four saves in the losing effort.
