BOCA RATON, Fla. – The FGCU men's soccer team (3-4-1) fell on the road to FAU (3-3-0) by a score of 3-1, Wednesday night at the FAU Soccer Stadium.
"Right now we're just not executing at the level that we need to be successful," said head coach
Jesse Cormier." "There are some spells throughout the game in which we do but other times not. We need to be able to put together a full 90-minute performance and play well in all three phases of the game, especially in the final attacking third. We're all looking for answers right now as we start conference play this weekend."
In the very first minute of play,
Chris Clement (Mallorca, Spain/Lycée Francais de Palma) looked to have his first goal of the season but it was called back due to an offside call from the line referee. At the 12th minute of action, FAU got on the board to take a 1-0 lead. The home side then made it 2-0 in the 28th minute as Ivan Mykhailenk collected his second goal of the contest.
Stephen Linton (Miramar, Fla./La Salle HS) got a great look with two minutes left in the first period but his right-footed shot in the box bounced off the crossbar.
FGCU recorded five shots with two coming on frame. Both squads recorded two corner kicks apiece.
With just over 34 minutes left in the second stanza, FGCU went up one man as an FAU player was booked with a red card. After a constant attack,
Joao Burti (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Iowa Western) got the Eagles' first tally in the 69th minute, his first of the year. Playing on the right side,
O'Vonte Mullings (Toronto, Ontario/Northview Heights Secondary HS) crossed a pass into the box which Burti tucked away to the near post.
The Green and Blue went on to fire three shots in the final 20 minutes of the contest, all coming on target. All said FGCU edged FAU in shots 14-13 (nine on frame) and 8-5 in corner kicks.
