Lexington, Ky. - The FGCU volleyball team (6-0) will look to continue the best start in program history with matchups against Indiana, No. 15 Kentucky and Cleveland State this weekend in the Bluegrass Battle hosted by the University of Kentucky.

The Eagles already have the best start to a Division I campaign in program history, and they've tied the Division II era 2004 team for the best undefeated start to a season.

Furthermore, FGCU is one of only 23 teams across the nation that remain undefeated, and they are currently riding a 19-match regular season winning streak that stretches back to Oct. 7 of last year.

Notables
FGCU is coming off wins over USF, Auburn and George Washington in this past weekend's Hurricane Invitational. While there was no all-tournament team, it can be argued that several players would have been in contention from the Eagles:
- Cortney VanLiew, who had at least 13 kills and a .345 hitting percentage in each match, including 18 kills at a .471 clip against Auburn and a double-double (13 kills, 10 digs) against George Washington.
- Dana Axner, who increased her stretch of double-digit dig performances to open the season to six. She had 17 in the team's win over Auburn, which was her third-highest match total of the season. On top of that, she has at least five assists in each of the past four outings.
- Chelsey Lockey, who averaged 34 assists over the three matches while producing her second double-double (37 assists, 13 digs) of the season in the win over USF.
- Tori Morris, who averaged four blocks per match over the three matches. She added a season-high nine kills against USF.

Top Frosh
Erin Shomaker, who had 15 total kills in wins over USF and Auburn, was named the ASUN's freshman of the week on Monday. She had eight kills over 11 attempts (.727) against USF and seven kills in 12 attempts vs Auburn (.583). She also totaled two digs and four blocks (two solo) on the week. Overall, Shomaker (Granville, Ohio/Granville HS) is hitting .375 with 40 kills, 12 blocks and 10 digs this year, and she has at least seven kills in five of six matches.

Opponent History
FGCU, who picked up its first-ever win over a Power 5 school with a five-set decision over Indiana on Sept. 10, 2016, is 1-1 all-time against the Hoosiers. This will be the program's first-ever matchups against Kentucky and Cleveland State.

Power 5 History
The Eagles, who are 1-0 against Power 5 teams this year after last weekend's sweep of Auburn, has three more such matchups over the next two weekends - Indiana, Kentucky and Miami (Sept. 20). In addition to the aforementioned win over Indiana in 2016, FGCU has also knocked off Power 5 schools Miami and Auburn over the past two seasons.

Against Ranked Teams History
In the opening round of last year's NCAA Tournament, the Green and Blue produced its first-ever win over a ranked opponent with a five-set decision over No. 21 UCF. Friday night's tilt against No. 15 Kentucky will represent FGCU's 15th all-time meeting against a ranked team at the Division I level.

Road Trippin'
This weekend is the middle of what is a three-week stretch on the road for FGCU. They'll close out the major portion of their non-conference slate in Orlando against Miami, UCF and FAU Sept. 20-21. Conference play then begins on the road at Liberty Sept. 24 before the Green and Blue hosts North Alabama on Sept. 27.

Notes
For those traveling to Lexington this weekend, there will be no admission fee for all matches except when FGCU plays Kentucky on Friday night. Furthermore, Memorial Coliseum has no air conditioning and temperatures are expected to rise to around 95 degrees. Traffic will also be heavy in Lexington over the weekend due to a 7 p.m. home football game against Florida on Saturday night.

COACH BOTSFORD

Matt Botsford is in his sixth season as head coach of the FGCU women's volleyball program in 2019 after being hired on Feb. 10, 2014. In his tenure, Botsford-led teams have compiled a 122-45 (.731) record overall, including a 57-15 (.792) record in ASUN play. Including this past season, he has taken the program to heights it has not seen in the Division-I era (2007-present) – registering at least 20 wins overall in four straight seasons and at least 10 wins in conference play five straight seasons. Furthermore, the team's offensive efficiency has drastically improved since Botsford started. In his first two seasons, his squad produced hitting percentages of .212 and .220. The next two, which saw .267 and .256 percentages, are the third and fourth highest in program history. In 2018, he led the program to its first regular season championship since 2012 (fourth overall) and its first-ever ASUN tournament title, NCAA tournament appearance, NCAA tournament win and victory over a ranked team. His first two campaigns resulted in ASUN regular season runner-up finishes, and the following two saw the Eagles advance to the tournament championship. On Sept. 10, 2016, Botsford led his team to a five-set win over Indiana in Alico Arena, which signified the program's first-ever win over a team from a Power-5 conference. This past season, he led the team to a win over Miami (Fla.) - the program's first-ever road Power-5 win.
