@FGCU_Softball Hosts Stetson, Senior Day On Tap Sunday

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team enters its final two weeks of regular season play hosting Stetson for a three-game series Saturday-Sunday.

Before Sunday's contest, FGCU will honor its five seniors in Bri Bennett, Brooke Clemens, Racquel Fournet, Kate Kelly and Riley Randolph.

Last Time Out
FGCU is coming off a two-game road sweep of UNF last weekend. Due to weather, one game was canceled. Kelly (Cape Coral, FL./Seminole State College) recorded a total of three RBI, posting a .333 batting average. Meanwhile, Fournet (Windermere, FL./Windermere Preparatory School) hit .500 with a pair of RBI. In the circle, Randolph (St. Petersburg, FL./Northeast HS) and Marissa Mesiemore (Bushnell, FL./South Sumter HS) each collected a win as Mesiemore yielded no earned runs.

With both wins, FGCU secured a spot in the upcoming 2019 ASUN Tournament. 

The Green and Blue
At the plate Kelly leads the team in hits (47), batting average (.370) and stolen bases (18). Fournet is hitting .324 while leading the team in RBI (26).

In the circle, Randolph has collected 16 wins in 23 starts, holding opposing batters to a .187 BA. She is currently tied for 24th in the nation in shutouts (six), 13th in ERA (1.21), and 19th in strikeouts (189). Mesiemore is 9-4 with a 1.76 ERA in 19 appearances.

The pitching staff as a whole has combined to post a 1.85 ERA which sits 13th in the country.

RPI Watch
Heading into the weekend the ASUN has four teams represented in the top-100 of the RPI standings. Liberty (52) and Lipscomb (56) are four spots behind one another while FGCU (61) and UNF (100) round out the list. The Eagles own a win over No. 16 Minnesota (ranked No. 15 at the time) who boast a No. 11 RPI.

ASUN Championship
FGCU will play host to the 2019 ASUN Softball Championship Wednesday-Saturday, May 8-11. This will mark the third time FGCU will serve as hosts for the tournament, the first time coming back in 2015. The winner of the event will earn the ASUN's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship tournament. Game times will be announced at a later date but tickets can be purchased here.

Scouting the Hatters
Sophomore Danielle Diaz leads the team in hitting with a .356 BA while junior Elizabeth Jackson is Stetson's second .300 plus hitter (.346). Stetson has swiped 68 bags this year with junior Riley Russell leading the charge at 23.

In the circle, four pitchers have seen action for the Hatters as senior Tori Perkins owns a team-low 2.45 ERA going 12-13 overall. The staff as a whole has combined to post a 3.38 ERA.

COACH DEIROS
The founding father of FGCU softball, David Deiros is in his 17th season as head coach. Hired in 2001 to build the program from the dirt up, Deiros has since guided the Eagles to a Eagles to a 633-330-3 (.657), going 147-87 (.623) in the ASUN, having 13 seasons with a winning record, and nine campaigns with 35 wins. Deiros is a former head coach at the 1998 Florida State Runner-up Lely High School in Naples and is the founding head coach of the 1999 District Champion/2001 Regional Runner-up Gulf Coast High School in Naples.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 77 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 11+ seasons at the Division-I level. Additionally, in just seven+ seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 36 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including both men's and women's soccer again in 2018. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best 6th-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.35 GPA in the classroom in the Spring, 2018 and had an ASUN Conference and State of Florida best five teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport.  The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours – being recognized as one of two runner-ups for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
