FORT MYERS, FL - The FGCU baseball team will finish off its season-opening 11-game home slate with a four-game series against Siena College Feb. 28-March 2. The Green and Blue will play under the lights at 6:30 p.m. both Thursday and Friday before competing in a doubleheader on Saturday. Saturday's opener is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the series finale will follow after the first game concludes.
A LOOK AT FGCU
• The Eagles (5-2) swept last weekend's series against LIU Brooklyn after shutting out the Blackbirds entirely during Friday night's game and conceding just two runs all series.
• Freshman
Joe Kinker has come on strong for FGCU in his debut campaign. The Northport, Florida native leads the team in batting average (.524) through seven games, cranking out 11 hits, nine runs scored, three doubles and one home run.
• Kinker's batting average is good for second in the ASUN, behind Jacksonville senior infielder Angel Camacho (.538).
• The Eagles have dominated the mound so far this season. Last weekend's series against LIU Brooklyn was the first time in FGCU's NCAA Division I era that the team held an opponent to two runs or fewer in a three-game series.
• Junior
Mason Studstill (0.00) and sophomores
Tyler Shuck (0.00) and
Nikolas Bitner (0.87) have posted the lowest ERAs in the ASUN thus far.
• The team ERA of 1.86 sits at the top of the league and ranks 11th nationally.
SERIES HISTORY VS. SIENA COLLEGE
• This will be the first series between the two teams. The Eagles took on the Saints in a midweek game on Feb. 25, 2015 and claimed a 9-5 victory.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
• Siena (2-4) opened its season with a three-game loss at UCF by scores of 3-2, 5-1 and 7-1.
• The Saints are coming off winning a three-game series at reigning ASUN champion Stetson. Siena claimed the first and third games. The teams were scheduled to play a fourth game on Tuesday night, but it was canceled due to weather.
• Freshman Devan Kruzinski (.333) has had a big impact in his debut for the Saints. He leads the team with four RBIs, two doubles and is one of two players to start all six games thus far.
• Siena went 21-35 last year overall and tallied a 14-10 conference record in the MAAC.
• The Saints lost their leadoff batter, Marcos Campos, to the San Francisco Giants in the 2018 MLB Draft. Campos was second on the team in batting average (.322) and led the team with nine stolen bases.
• Siena returned two of its best pitchers in senior Tommy Miller (1.54) and junior Brendan White (2.77). Miller led the team last year with 84 strikeouts and a 3.70 ERA.
REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS
• The Eagles are now up to 67 runs through seven games, marking the highest run total for FGCU through the opening seven games to any season since 2010.
• The run production is also the second-most in the NCAA Division I era (since 2007).
• FGCU tallied 23 runs in its victory over Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 16 during the teams' season-opening series. The run total was the highest in the NCAA Division I era.
• The Green and Blue have also been setting records on the mound. The Eagles outscored LIU Brooklyn 29-2 and outhit the Blackbirds 39-8 in last weekend's series.
• This was the first time in FGCU's NCAA Division I era that the team has held an opponent to two runs or fewer in a three-game series. The only other two occurrences came when the Eagles competed at the Division II level and held Albany State to two runs in 2005 and Clark Atlanta to one run in 2007.
2019 SCHEDULE
• The Eagles have begun their 55-game campaign with a bang, opening the year playing each of their 11 games in the friendly confines of Swanson Stadium.
• On top of the Ohio State clash, which FGCU lost 2-0, the Green and Blue will play nine times against programs from Power 5 universities (ACC, Big Ten. Big 12, Pac-12, SEC).
• FGCU is billed to play 36 home games and 19 contests on the road. Additional notable non-conference home games include dates with Rutgers (March 15-17), FAU (March19), FIU (March 26) and Miami (April 10).
• The first ASUN Conference action will be a three-game home series against Lipscomb April 5-7. The Eagles will then hit the road for a weekend at Kennesaw Sate April 12-14.
• FGCU will compete 16 times against programs who have played in the NCAA Championship tournament at least once over the last two years. The mark includes a Florida squad that won the national championship two years ago and advanced to the 2018 College World Series. FGCU will also grace a Stetson program (May 3-5) that hosted an NCAA Regional last year and advanced to a Super Regional.
• The 2019 ASUN Conference Championship will be held May 22-25 in Demand, Florida, and will be hosted by Stetson.
LAST TIME OUT
• The Eagles swept LIU Brooklyn, outscoring the Blackbirds 29-2.
• Junior
Mason Studstill struck out 11 Blackbirds and gave up no runs with just one hit and one walk conceded through 6.0 innings of work on Sunday.
• Freshman
Joe Kinker tied the school record with three doubles during Saturday's matchup, a mark that has been matched just one other time in school history.
• Senior
Eric Gonzalez, junior
Alex Brait and Kinker had three hits each on Saturday, combining for six RBIs and five runs scored.
• Sophomore
Nikolas Bitner and junior
Trey Vickery were the only two pitchers needed to toss a clean nine innings at Friday's game. Bitner gave up three hits, while Vickery only allowed one.
UP NEXT
• The Eagles will hit the road for the first time in their 2019 campaign, heading to Gainesville for a midweek matchup against Florida on Tuesday, March 5 and Wednesday, March 6. Both games are set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
• The Gators advanced to the NCAA College World Series last year after winning both the Gainesville Regional and Super Regional with a 5-2 record. The 2017 NCAA Champions went 2-2 in Omaha last year and are currently ranked No. 3 in the nation in the USA Today Coaches' Poll.

5X CHAMPS
The 2017 season was a magical one for the Green and Blue that ended in the program's first Division I NCAA Championship tournament berth. The Eagles ended the year 43-20, which included a midweek sweep over No. 2 Florida, single wins over No. 1 Florida State, Miami and a three-game sweep at UNC Wilmington. The wins over Miami, FSU and UF marked the first time FGCU defeated all three programs in the same season.
Reaching as high as No. 9 in the polls, the highest of any program at FGCU, the Eagles struggled in April but bounced back to finish third in the ASUN. During the ASUN Championship, FGCU won four games in a span of 29 hours for its first tournament crown.
The Green and Blue earned the No. 2 seed in the Chapel Hill Regional, defeating Michigan 10-6 before losses to Davidson and North Carolina ended their season. The tournament title added to FGCU's four regular season crowns.
