Morris, Carroll lead @FGCU_VB to 11th straight win in sweep of North Alabama

Serrano moves into 2nd place on ASUN's career blocks list

FLORENCE, Ala. - Tori Morris produced a career-high 10 kills along with six blocks to lead the top-ranked FGCU volleyball team (21-3, 9-1 ASUN) to a 25-14, 25-6, 25-22 win over North Alabama on the road Sunday afternoon in Flowers Hall.

The Green and Blue have won 11 straight matches and 16 straight sets, and their 21 wins is tied for fourth-most in the nation with Pittsburgh and South Dakota. Stephen F. Austin, Western Kentucky and Milwaukee are all tied for the most with 22 each. Following the match, the Eagles also learned they have moved into sole possession of first place in the ASUN standings with Kennesaw State's (15-7, 8-2) loss to North Florida.

"Tori was outstanding today both offensively and with her blocking," FGCU head coach Matt Botsford said. "I really liked how she asserted herself right from the start. Amanda and Alayna also did a nice job filling into the libero position."

Morris (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam HS) hit .471 over 17 attempts while matching her season-high in blocks that was set on Aug. 31 against Bryant and Sept. 14 against Cleveland State. She has at least seven kills in three of the past four matches.

Daniele Serrano (Sanford, Fla./Seminole HS), who had four kills at a .667 percentage, tallied three block assists to push her career total to 436.0, which moves her past Morgan Van Alstine (North Florida, 2013-16, 435.0) for the second most in ASUN history. She is now only 39 blocks shy of surpassing Meredith Hardy (ETSU, 2010-13, 474.0) for the most all-time.

Offensively, Cortney VanLiew (9) and Erin Shomaker (7) also contributed in kills while each hitting above .300. As a team, the Eagles hit .356 as eight different players recorded at least one successful offensive attack.

Chelsey Lockey had a match-high 23 assists, while Amanda Carroll (3) and Alayna Ryan (2) added the other five. Lockey (Eaton, Colo./Eaton HS) also had a match-high eight digs along with two aces and one block assist, while Ryan had seven digs - her most since tallying 12 against San Diego State on Aug. 31.

Carroll (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) led FGCU in aces by tying her career-high of six that was originally set against Ohio on Aug. 27, 2016. In fact, Carroll now has two of 12 instances in program history where a player has recorded six aces. As a team, the Eagles had 12, which was one shy of matching the program's Division I era record for most in a match.

Another key contributor was Snowy Burnam (Palm City, Fla./Jensen Beach HS), who had three kills (.500 pace), one ace, four digs and three block assists.

Notes
With Sunday's win, FGCU is now five shy of matching the program's Division I era overall winning streak record of 16 that was set last year, and they're four shy of matching the regular season streak of 15 that was set in 2016.

FGCU will return home on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. rematch against Liberty inside Alico Arena. It was the Flames who handed the Eagles their lone loss of conference play.

COACH BOTSFORD
Matt Botsford is in his sixth season as head coach of the FGCU women's volleyball program in 2019 after being hired on Feb. 10, 2014. In his tenure, Botsford-led teams have compiled a 136-48 (.739) record overall, including a 66-16 (.805) record in ASUN play. Including this past season, he has taken the program to heights it has not seen in the Division-I era (2007-present) – registering at least 20 wins overall in four straight seasons and at least 10 wins in conference play five straight seasons. Furthermore, the team's offensive efficiency has drastically improved since Botsford started. In his first two seasons, his squad produced hitting percentages of .212 and .220. The next two, which saw .267 and .256 percentages, are the third and fourth highest in program history. In 2018, he led the program to its first regular season championship since 2012 (fourth overall) and its first-ever ASUN tournament title, NCAA tournament appearance, NCAA tournament win and victory over a ranked team. His first two campaigns resulted in ASUN regular season runner-up finishes, and the following two saw the Eagles advance to the tournament championship. On Sept. 10, 2016, Botsford led his team to a five-set win over Indiana in Alico Arena, which signified the program's first-ever win over a team from a Power-5 conference. This past season, he led the team to a win over Miami (Fla.) - the program's first-ever road Power-5 win.
