FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women's tennis team is back in action taking on Middle Tennessee Friday morning and FAU Saturday morning. Both matches have an 11 am first-serve.
LAST TIME OUT
The Eagles are 11 days removed from their last match in which they suffered a 6-1 loss to #17 Miami. In doubles play, the No. 1 team of
Maja Ornberg (Kil, Sweden/De la Gardiegymnasiet, Lidkoping) and
Julia Ascúa (Santa Fe, Argentina/Domingo G. Silva) defeated Miami's 51st-ranked doubles tandem, 6-2. In singles action, Ascúa carried her strong play onto court No. 3 where she won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
SCOUTING THE BLUE RAIDERS
Overall, Middle Tennessee comes into Southwest Florida with a 1-3 record. The duo of Costanza Magazzini and Zani Barbard boast a 3-0 doubles record, most recently picking up a 6-1 win over Wichita State on the top court. Meanwhile, in singles competition, Lidia Burrows is 2-2, playing mostly out of the No. 3 slot.
Last season, the Eagles picked up a 5-2 win over the Blue Raiders at home.
SCOUTING THE OWLS
FAU boasts a 1-2 overall record with its lone win coming over USF. In that 4-3 victory, the Owls captured two of three doubles wins, followed by a trio of wins in singles action. Martina Kudelova is 2-0 in doubles play while holding a 1-0 record on court No. 2 in singles.
FGCU trailed FAU last season on the road 3-0, before claiming three-straight singles victories en route to the 4-3 triumph.
UP NEXT
FGCU will hit the road for the first time this year and travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to face #20 FSU on Feb. 9 at 1 pm.

HEAD COACH COURTNEY VERNON
FGCU's women's tennis team is led by three-time ASUN Coach of the Year Courtney Vernon, who led the Eagles to back-to-back ASUN regular-season crowns in her fifth season in 2018. She has mentored her student-athletes into earning 56 ASUN All-Conference and All-Academic honors, including the 2014, 2016 and 2017 ASUN Freshman of the Year as well as the 2016 and 2017 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2018 Player of the Year. Vernon has led the Green and Blue to a 62-44 overall record (.586) and 27-5 conference record (.827) in her six years at FGCU.
