JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior setter
Maggie Rick will look to become just the second player in program history to achieve 4,000 career assists when the FGCU volleyball team (7-5, 0-0 ASUN) travels to face Jacksonville and North Florida this weekend to open conference play.
Rick (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity Catholic HS) needs just 13 assists to join Gigi Meyer (4,408, 2011-14) as one of two players with at least 4,000. Rick needs 422 assists to surpass Meyer as the program's all-time leader.
SCOUTING JACKSONVILLE
The Dolphins will enter this weekend having lost six straight and 12 of 13 to open the season. The team's lone win came on Sept. 7 against Alabama A&M in a neutral site match in Macon, Ga. They dropped a four-set match to Stetson in their only ASUN match so far.
Mallory Mattingly, a junior outside hitter, has recorded two straight matches with 20 + kills and leads the team with 182 overall this year, including 3.50 per set. However, she's attacking at just a .127 rate. In fact, as a team, the Dolphins are hitting .150, and freshman middle blocker Giao Huynh leads the team at .229. In addition to Mattingly, Sara Dyslin also has reached the century mark in kills with 120.
Defensively, Natalie Wehner, a junior outside hitter, leads the team with 143 digs. Interestingly enough, along with Mattingly's 103 digs, outside hitters are 1-2 on the team in digs. Senior setter Lauren Petersen has the vast majority of the team's assists with 431 of 531 overall.
Overall, Mattingly leads the team in kills, kills/set and aces (17), while sophomore middle blocker Hannah Marchand leads the team with 43 total blocks (seven solo).
SCOUTING NORTH FLORIDA
North Florida is coming off a straight-set victory over Bethune Cookman on Tuesday. Gabby O'Connell notched her seventh double-double of the season with 15 kills and 10 digs, while Callie Workman had a career-high 20 digs.
Overall, UNF has three players in the top 10 of the ASUN in kills – Taryn Griffey (184), Solimar Cestero (128) and Devyn Wheeler (124). Senior setter Madilyn McCarty is 33 assists away from 3,000 in her NCAA Division-I career, which started at Winthrop. She has six double-doubles this year. Half of North Florida's 16-member roster is in their first year at the school.

COACH BOTSFORD
Matt Botsford is in his fifth season as head coach of the FGCU women's volleyball program in 2018 after being hired on Feb. 10, 2014. In his four plus seasons, Botsford-led teams have compiled a 96-43 (.691) record overall, including a 42-14 (.750) record in ASUN play. He has taken the program to heights it has not seen in the Division-I era (2007-present) – registering at least 20 wins overall in three straight seasons and at least 10 wins in conference play four straight seasons. Furthermore, the team's offensive efficiency has drastically improved since Botsford started. In his first two seasons, his squad produced hitting percentages of .212 and .220. The past two, which have seen .267 and .256 percentages, are the third and fourth highest in program history. All four seasons under Botsford have seen a top-3 ASUN regular season finish and at least an ASUN semifinal appearance. His first two campaigns resulted in regular season runner-up finishes, and the past two have seen the Eagles advance to the tournament championship. On Sept. 10, 2016, Botsford led his team to a five-set win over Indiana in Alico Arena, which signified the program's first-ever win over a team from a Power-5 conference.
