ATLANTA, GA – The FGCU men's soccer team swept the ASUN Weekly awards as
Shak Adams and
Raheem Somersall were announced as this week's honorees, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
This becomes
Adams' (Antioch, Tenn./Cane Ridge HS) second career ASUN Player of the Week award whileÂ
Somersall (Basseterre, St. Kitts/Southern Durham/Appalachian State) garners his first Defensive Player of the Week accolade.
In the 5-3 win over I-75 rival USF Saturday night, Adams kicked off the scoring frenzy netting a header goal off a cross from
Kareem Riley (Couva, Trinidad and Tobago/Presentation College San Fernando)Â in the 16th minute. The junior then pushed FGCU's margin to 3-0 in the 30th minute as he finished on a timely pass beyond midfield from
Jordan Lue (Tampa, Fla./Wharton/UCF), firing a shot between the keeper's legs. The Cane Ridge High School product collected his hat-trick shortly after the Bulls made it a one-goal game (3-2). In the 66th minute
, Titouan Le Menec (Guipavas, France/STMG/Bluefield) maneuvered around a defender inside the five-yard box, as he dished it to Adams for the near post finish.
The hat-trick became the fifth overall in program history and the first since 2016 (
Albert Ruiz vs Rutgers).Â
"Shak has been making great progress as a dynamic player for us," said head coach
Jesse Cormier. "He has the ability to go both directions and deliver the final pass and finish his chances. He's becoming a complete player."
Just like Adams, Somersall has started each of the Green and Blue's five matches so far. A leader on the pitch as a captain, the St. Kitts native broke up 21 plays to ensure USF did not take any lead or find an equalizer Saturday night.
"Raheem has an out of this world work rate," said Cormier. "He covers so much ground and has the courage to make plays and also build our attack. He is also developing profound respect as a team leader who has the character to keep the standard high in training and during momentum shifts in games."
