FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women's tennis team (8-7, 4-0 ASUN) capped off the weekend on another strong note, shutting out USC Upstate (1-17, 0-4 ASUN) 7-0 Saturday evening at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
The Eagles have now won 10-consecutive regular season ASUN matches including 15 of the last 16 in their conference slate.
"We are growing every time we play," stated head coach
Courtney Vernon. "What makes this experience so fun is the ladies' commitment to growth and committing to their plan when it gets uncomfortable. The ladies are acting mature and in control. It's exciting to be a part of this team's journey."
Right from the start, FGCU got out to a 1-0 lead with solid performances in doubles competition.
Madison Gallegos (Denver, Colo./Colorado Connections Academy) and teammate
Patricia Villar (Logrono, Spain/Bachillerato Santa Maria/Louisiana Monroe) claimed the first victory on court #3 via a 6-1 decision. Looking to clinch the point for the Eagles,
Julianna Curtis (West Des Moines, Iowa/Allendale Academy) and
Laura Falceto Font (Zaragoza, Spain/El Pilar Maristas Zaragoza) did just that on court #2 picking up a 6-2 decision while court #1 went unfinished.
The Green and Blue kept its foot on the gas pedal transitioning into singles play. The first pair of victories were provided by
Julia Ascúa (Santa Fe, Argentina/Domingo G. Silva) and
Bridget Forster (Boca Raton, Fla./Florida Virtual School) as each Eagle won in straight sets making it a 3-0 match.
Then for the second time in three days,
Maja Ornberg (Kil, Sweden/De la Gardiegymnasiet, Lidkoping) secured FGCU's triumph as she won decisively, 6-2, 6-1 claiming the fourth point. FGCU added to its lead coming out on top in the final remaining matches all in straight sets en route to the 7-0 victory, the fifth at home this season.
