FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men's tennis team continued to impress at home against conference foes, cruising to a 6-1 victory Thursday night over NJIT. The Eagles (7-10, 2-2) never left the match in double, claiming the first five points against the Highlanders (9-7, 1-3).
Â
"Today was our best performance during conference play," said head coach
CJ Weber. "The guys did a great job of implementing the things we were talking about after our performance against Kennesaw State, but now we have to do it again Saturday against Upstate. I was really fired up with our crowd today. Country Club Day was a real success and I'm hoping we get just as nice of a crowd to support the men and women this weekend."
The Eagles, who have earned more than 40 wins at home over the previous five seasons overall, were dominant in all facets to give life to the largest crowd of the season.
Doubles got off to a flying start thanks to an emphatic 6-0 win from
Oliver Landert (Naples, Fla./Florida Virtual School/Florida) and
Marcelo Tebet (Bucaramanga, Colombia/Oklahoma State) at No. 1 over Jan Cimrman and Abdullah Fouad. FGCU would not have to wait much longer to secure the doubles point for the sixth time in seven matches as
Ezequiel Cerrini (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla./Homeschool) and
Felipe Ramirez (Armenia, Colombia/Florida Virtual School) claimed a 6-3 victory over Richard Rangga and Lukas Zvikas at No. 2.
Ramirez was the first off the courts in singles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tomi Antoljak at No. 1.
Landert continued his impressive evening, dominating the first set 6-0 before coming away with a 6-2 win in the second set over Zvikas to put the Eagles in front 3-0 before 90 minutes had passed.
Approximately 20 minutes later,
Javier Fernandez (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB) clinched the Green and Blue's second ASUN win of the season, fighting off Zac Castagna 6-4 in the first before sealing the overall match victory with a 6-2 win in the second.
Tebet followed with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Zvikas before Cerrini fell 7-6, 4-6, 10-7 to Cimrman.
Austin Bates (Marietta, Ga./Pope HS) finished the night with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 6 over Rangga.
