FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men's tennis team made it back-to-back ASUN victories with a 6-1 win over USC Upstate Saturday. The Eagles (8-10, 3-2 ASUN) claimed the first six points, never putting the match in doubt in the team's third-straight victory over the Spartans (5-17, 0-4).
"This was our most complete weekend of the season," said head coach
CJ Weber. "We still have some work to do but I feel like we're getting closer to playing our best tennis. I was really happy with how we played all weekend now we need to continue to get better."
A competitive doubles section went the way of the Eagles. FGCU started strong yet again thanks to the top-pairing of
Oliver Landert (Naples, Fla./Florida Virtual School/Florida) and
Marcelo Tebet (Londrina, Brazil/Colégio Anglo Americano). The duo defeated Igancio Garrido and Lucas Percy 6-2.
After
Felipe Escobar (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira/TCU) and
Austin Bates (Marietta, Ga./Pope HS) dropped a 6-4 decision to Luka Eble and Felix Ewers,
Felipe Ramirez (Armenia, Colombia/Florida Virtual School) and
Ezequiel Cerrini (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla./Homeschool) overturned a late deficit to lead 6-5. After Francisco Neto and Fernando Bernardes forced a tiebreaker, the Eagle duo secured the doubles point with a 7-6 (7-3) victory.
Landert's impressive play continued, putting his match out of reach with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ankush Arora at No. 3. The senior is now 4-1 in ASUN play. Shortly after,
Javier Fernandez (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB) finished off Eble 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.
Cerrini then bounced back from a difficult loss Thursday, taking down Neto with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles to clinch the match.
As the match progressed, Tebet overturned a 6-4 loss in his first set, to win his second set 6-3. Tebet then grinded out his third set, claiming it 10-8.
Shortly after Bates, who won his first set 6-4, came back from 3-5 down to force a tiebreaker before claiming that 9-7.
Still in front 6-0, Ramirez fell in three sets at No. 1 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 for the final 6-1 tally.
