@FGCU_WTen Claims Outright ASUN Title, Takes down Stetson on Senior Night 7-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women's tennis team (10-7, 6-0 ASUN) ended the regular season on a superb outing to claim its second-straight outright ASUN title in the 7-0 defeat of Stetson (11-8, 3-3 ASUN) Saturday evening at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

The Eagles have now won 12-consecutive regular-season ASUN matches including 17 of the last 18 in their conference slate as they finish 6-0 for the second-straight year in the ASUN.

After the doubles competition, the Eagles gathered on court #1 to honor its lone senior Julianna Curtis (West Des Moines, Iowa/Allendale Academy) in recognition of all of her accomplishments on and off the hard courts during her four years at FGCU.

"The ladies played with a lot of focus tonight," said head coach Courtney Vernon. "We were so grateful to celebrate Julianna this evening as the special young lady she is. We're grateful for what she has given to this university these past four years. Also, we are thankful for the community that supports our program and all of our donors that came out this evening for our last home match of the season. Tonight we would like to send a special thank you to Bonita Bay, who has given a scholarship to Juliana these past four years. What a gift it is to have them support us."

FGCU took the lead right out of the gates and never looked back. In doubles competition, Maja Ornberg (Kil, Sweden/De la Gardiegymnasiet, Lidkoping) and Julia Ascúa (Santa Fe, Argentina/Domingo G. Silva) turned in a strong performance on court #1 taking down the Hatters 6-3. After Stetson earned the split on court #2, Madison Gallegos (Denver, Colo./Colorado Connections Academy) and Patricia Villar (Logrono, Spain/Bachillerato Santa Maria/Louisiana Monroe) claimed a 7-5 win to give FGCU the doubles point and 1-0 advantage.

Transitioning into singles action, FGCU dominated in all facets, coming out on top in straight sets in each of the six courts. Ascúa kicked it off by picking up a 6-1, 6-2 triumph on court #2. Shortly after, Ornberg kept the momentum going also claiming a 6-1 and 6-2 decision.

Ahead 3-0 to this point, Sofia Perez (Alajuela, Costa Rica/Florida Virtual School) clinched the fourth point for the Green and Blue taking her first set 6-1 and battled back in her second set gaining a 6-4 outcome.

FGCU cruised the rest of the match, yielding no more than four points in the remainder of the sets, as Gallegos (6-1, 6-4) wrapped up the action on court #3.
