KENNESAW, Ga. – The FGCU men's tennis team (6-10, 1-2 ASUN) fell on the road to Kennesaw State (7-7, 1-1) 5-2 Saturday afternoon as ASUN play continued.
Â
"Today was not one of our better efforts," said head coach
CJ Weber. "We'll get back to work this week and get ready for NJIT."
Â
The Eagles got off to a slow start as they dropped the doubles point for the first time in five matches.
Austin Bates (Marietta, Ga./Pope HS) andÂ
Felipe Ramirez (Armenia, Colombia/Florida Virtual School) fell 4-6 and
Oliver Landert (Naples, Fla./Florida Virtual School/Florida) andÂ
Marcelo Tebet (Londrina, Brazil/Colégio Anglo Americano) lost 3-6 to fall behind 1-0.
Â
The deficit expanded to 2-0 after Ramirez was beaten in straight sets, but
Ezequiel Cerrini (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla./Homeschool) earned the first point of the day for FGCU with a 6-1,6-3 win over Lucas de Torres Curth on court #2.
Â
Soon after, both Landert and
Javier Fernandez (Ibiza, Spain, IES CTEIB) would also lose and the Owls were able to clinch the match. However, Bates earned his second-straight victory in singles, defeating Harrison Wood 6-3, 7-5 for the second point, but Tebet fell in a third set tiebreaker.

CJ WEBER
FGCU is led by
CJ Weber who has coached 26 ASUN All-Conference selections since joining the Green and Blue in 2011. In his sixth year, Weber has compiled a 79-66 (.549) overall record and a 30-16 (.694) record in ASUN play. In 2014-15, Weber guided the Eagles to their first-ever ASUN Championship and first-ever ASUN Regular Season title after a program-best 17 wins. In his third season, Weber led Jordi Vives to a No. 35 national ranking, a nation-leading 14-match unbeaten streak and the round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament - the program's first appearance. The Eagles completed consecutive perfect ASUN seasons in 2016 and back-to-back conference titles as well as a second-straight Coach of the Year honor for Weber. FGCU again won the ASUN Championship in 2017, advancing to its second NCAA Tournament.
