Dow Makes History, No. 1 @FGCU_WBB Rolls Past No. 4 Lipscomb 105-55 in ASUN Semifinals

FORT MYERS, Fla. - China Dow poured in a season-high 30 points as the top-seeded FGCU women's basketball team (29-4) broke several individual and team records in a 105-55 win over Lipscomb University in the ASUN tournament semifinals on Wednesday in Alico Arena.

With the win, the Eagles advance to the championship game on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Alico Arena against No. 2 Jacksonville. It will be the program's seventh consecutive appearance in the title game tilt (4-2), and the Green and Blue can break the ASUN record for most conference tournament championships all-time with a win.

"I was really pleased with our performance," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "We shot the ball exceptionally well. I thought China was instant offense. She had it going, had several threes in the first half. She came up huge for us. Gradinjan, Nas, they provided some offense for us. I thought it was a really good team defensive effort, not giving up too many open looks at three and making them work for shots."

Dow (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy of Louisville), incredibly, scored those 30 points in just 18 minutes while finishing 11-for-15 from the field and 8-for-10 from 3-point range, while adding six rebounds, four assists and a steal. The redshirt senior established new career-highs in field goals made, 3-point field goals made and 3-point field goals attempted. On top of that, her eight 3-pointers broke the ASUN tournament single game record.

The performance was Dow's fifth game with at least 20 points this year and the sixth in her career. She surpassed her previous season-high of 26 set on Nov. 23 in a win over DePaul and fell just one short of her career high of 31 from last year's ASUN tournament championship game. Her eight 3-pointers on 10 attempts is the highest 3-point percentage with double-digit attempts in program history, topping Jen Conely's 8-for-11 performance on Nov. 22, 2005 and Kelsey Jacobson's 8-for-12 performance on Dec. 3, 2011.

Meanwhile, Dow led the charge on one of the best team offensive performances in program history. The Green and Blue poured in a season-high and ASUN tournament record 105 points, which is the second most points in a single game in the program's Division-I era behind the 108 points - also against Lipscomb - on Feb. 27, 2014. It is the sixth most in a game overall since the program's inception.

The Eagles finished 22-for-44 from 3-point range, which not only ties a season-high for makes set against Abilene Christian on Dec. 3, but it ties a program record achieved on Jan. 12, 2013 against ETSU. The performance fell just three shy of tying the all-time NCAA single game record of 25. FGCU also dished out a single game Division-I era program record 32 assists on 39 field goals, which tops the previous record of 31 set just less than a month ago on Feb. 10 against USC Upstate. That total is also a new ASUN tournament record.

In addition to those records, the 50-point margin of victory represents the largest in the history of the ASUN tournament, topping Lipscomb's 42-point win over USC Upstate in this year's semifinals.

FGCU also now has 402 3-pointers this year, which extends its ASUN and program record, and is just 23 shy of breaking the NCAA's all-time single season record of 424 held by Sacramento State's 2014-15 team. The Eagles are also leading the nation with 12.2 3-pointers per game, which is an ASUN and program record, following Wednesday's game.

Defensively, FGCU held Lipscomb's Loren Cagle, who was voted the ASUN player of the year, to a 2-for-13 performance, including an 0-for-6 finish from 3-point range. She tied her season-low with four points and had a team-high five turnovers.

Lipscomb actually scored the game's first six points as FGCU didn't get on the board until Nasrin Ulel's 3-pointer with 5:59 left in the quarter. Ulel (Murrietta, Calif./Murrietta HS) then found Tytionia Adderly for a layup on the next possession, and an Erica Nelson 3-pointer two minutes later gave the Eagles their first lead of the game.

FGCU went on a 19-2 run over a three and a half minute stretch to close the quarter and open the second, highlighted by Ulel's buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the first. After Lipscomb ended the run with a jumper, Taylor Gradinjan and Dow combined for back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to give FGCU a 33-12 lead and force a Lipscomb timeout.

Nelson (Kansas City, Mo./Lee Summit North HS) then closed the half by draining a 3-pointer and finding a cutting Gradinjan (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy HS) for a layup on back-to-back possessions to give FGCU a 47-22 lead.

The Eagles opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run that was capped by a Dow 3-pointer. In fact, she hit three straight from long range and then added a layup to give FGCU a 64-31 lead with 4:22 left in the quarter. Jessica Cattani and Lisa Zderadicka each found the scoring column late in the quarter, and Gradinjan hit a 3-pointer in the final minute to push the lead to 38 through three.

FGCU pushed the lead to as many as 57 on a layup from Cattani (Muskego, Wis./Muskego HS) with 1:46 left.

LEADERS
In addition to Dow's performance, Ulel had 17 points, two rebounds and two assists on 5-for-9 shooting to finish second on the team in scoring. All of her field goals came from 3-point range, and she now has five straight games with at least 10 points.

Gradinjan chipped in 16 points, six rebounds and four assists on 5-for-11 shooting. She went 4-for-8 from 3-point range. Cattani added 13 points in just 14 minutes off the bench on 6-for-8 shooting.

Nelson (9), Zderadicka (8), Adderly (5), Alyssa Blair (5) and Chandler Ryan (2) also reached the scoring column. Nelson and Ryan (Groveland, Ill./Morton HS) each added a game-high six assists, while Ryan achieved her total in just 10 minutes. Zderadicka (Vienna, Austria/HAK Korneuburg) had three assists, while Adderly (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) had a team-high seven rebounds along with four assists. Blair (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie HS) finished 2-for-3 from the field in 10 minutes.

NOTES
Aside from all that, FGCU has now won nine straight, one shy of its season-high, and has recorded victories in 20 of its past 21 and 24 of the past 26. Entering Wednesday, the team had the 15th longest winning streak in the nation.

FGCU is now 23-0 all-time against Lipscomb, including three wins this year.

The Eagles are now 17-0 at home, which surpasses Baylor and Mississippi State for the most home wins without a loss in NCAA Division-I play this year.

Wednesday's win over Lipscomb represented the first victory this year for FGCU when forcing fewer than 15 turnovers.

With its 29 wins, FGCU is tied with Green Bay for the ninth most wins in the nation. The teams ahead of them include: Mississippi State (32), Louisville (32), UConn (32), Baylor (31), Belmont (31), Oregon (30) and Mercer (30). The Eagles can achieve the program's fifth 30-win season on Sunday.

FGCU received 25 votes in this week's USA Today Coaches Poll, which is the 26th most in the nation and just three shy of No. 25 Belmont. Thus, with a tournament championship this week, the Eagles have a decent chance to move back into the top-25. Three weeks ago, the Eagles were ranked 25th, marking the first time the program had been ranked in one of the two major polls since March 2015.

ASUN NOTES

Sunday's matchup with Jacksonville in the ASUN tournament final will be the second meeting of the two programs in the winner-take-all game. No other program has won more than five games in the tournament's history. They are also 14-0 all-time in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the tournament.

Gradinjan officially moved into sole possession of second place all-time in career 3-point field goals made and attempted in program and ASUN history on Wednesday. In 145 career games, she is 298-for-798 from long distance, surpassing Whitney Knight's 294-for-791 performance from 2011-16. COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko rallied the 2016-17 Eagles to their seventh-straight 25-win campaign, which culminated in the team's fourth NCAA tournament appearance in six seasons of eligibility. The seven-time ASUN Coach of the Year was named the espnW Mid-Major Coach of the Year in 2015-16 following a run that witnessed the Eagles finish a best-ever 33-6. Over a five-year stretch starting in 2011-12, FGCU racked up four ASUN seasons with a perfect record and capped the run with back-to-back 30 plus win seasons. In 2014-15, the team earned its first top-25 ranking and another NCAA Tournament trip as a seven seed, where FGCU won its first ever NCAA Division-I Tournament game against No. 10 Oklahoma State. Including this year, Smesko has guided the Eagles to 14-straight 20-win seasons. He maintains a record of 433-86 (.834) at FGCU, including a 170-16 (.914) mark in ASUN play. Over the past six + seasons, he has guided FGCU to a 105-4 (.963) record in conference play with four undefeated seasons. Smesko earned his 400th career coaching win in 2014-15 in just 493 career games, two games faster than UConn's Geno Auriemma. He holds a career head coaching record of 494-113 (.813). Smesko ranks among an elite list of just four active Division I coaches with a career win percentage of .800 or higher, joining Auriemma, Baylor's Kim Mulkey and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer in the esteemed group.
