NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Winning the doubles point for the fifth-straight match, the FGCU men's tennis team kept its momentum to defeat Lipscomb late Thursday night 5-2. The Eagles (6-9, 1-1 ASUN) were in control throughout, dominating doubles before winning three of the first four singles matches against the Bisons (6-9, 1-1).
"Today was a great college match," said head coach
CJ Weber. "Lipscomb competed well, but we did a great job of getting on top and not letting go. We actually had a great crowd out there who supported us well, which is always nice to have on the road. Now we shift our focus to Kennesaw State."
Doubles win from No. 3 and No. 2 allowed FGCU to secure a quick doubles point. The pairing of
Austin Bates (Marietta, Ga./Pope HS) and
Felipe Ramirez (Armenia, Colombia/Florida Virtual School) took down Daniel Cardenas and Pedro Uribe at No. 3 6-2 before
Ezequiel Cerrini (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla./Homeschool) and
Mateo Ruiz (Bucaramanga, Colombia/Oklahoma State) took down Jorge Ortegon and Francesco Tacconi 6-1.
Javier Fernandez (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB) continued his dominance in ASUN play, defeating Tacconi 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 to put the Eagles in front 2-0 before Daniel Cardenas took down
Marcelo Tebet (Londrina, Brazil/Colégio Anglo Americano) by the same scoreline.
Lipscomb briefly tied the match at 2-2 when Victor Chaw defeated Cerrini 6-4, 7-5.
The Green and Blue, however, won the next three matches, started by a 6-3, 7-5 victory by Ramirez over Manzanares at No. 1. Leading 3-2, Bates secured the victory by taking down Uribe 7-5, 7-6.
Oliver Landert (Naples, Fla./Florida Virtual School/Florida) was the last off the courts, beating Ortegon 6-2, 4-6, 7-6.
