Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Chris Duarte

@FGCU_WTen Falls to Georgia State, 6-1

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women's tennis team (2-3) fell at home 6-1 to Georgia State (6-4) Saturday afternoon as the Eagles hosted their third home dual of the spring.

"Georgia State competed hard against us today," said head coach Courtney Vernon. "We just ran out of time but with that, we learned and will continue to learn from another opportunity. We will continue to trust the process."

The Eagles claimed one of the three doubles matches to hang around, but in singles play, the Panthers claimed five matches to pull away with the 6-1 final.

It was a tough day for singles as FGCU tried to hang around in close matches with GSU. The Green and Blue dropped two tie-breaker sets as the visitors would gain more traction. The lone victory of the afternoon was claimed by Patricia Villar (Logrono, Spain/Bachillerato Santa Maria/Louisiana Monroe), who was playing in the No. 6 spot.

Villar captured her first set over GSU's Anastasia Grosheva 6-4, but would fall in the second set, 4-6 before bouncing back to take the final set 10-6. Overall, the junior now moves to 2-1 in dual play this season.

In doubles play, the tandem of Julia Ascúa (Santa Fe, Argentina/Domingo G. Silva) and Maja Ornberg (Kil, Sweden/De la Gardiegymnasiet, Lidkoping) garnered FGCU's win with a final 6-4 decision. It is the fourth win between the pairing this season in doubles action.
