Julien's Scoring Punch, Team Defense Leads @FGCU_WBB To 74-60 Win Over Stetson, Outright ASUN Championship

DELAND, Fla. - Rosemarie Julien tied her season-high with 25 points to lead the FGCU women's basketball team (27-4, 13-1 ASUN) in a 74-60 win over Stetson University in the Edmunds Center on Saturday afternoon.

In doing so, the Green and Blue clinched the ASUN regular season championship outright. It is the program's eighth ASUN championship overall, and every one has came over the past 10 years. Furthermore, FGCU stretched its winning streak to seven overall, and they have won 17 of the past 18 and 21 of the past 23.

The Eagles will now return home with the No. 1 seed and home court advantage throughout the ASUN tournament. They will square off against No. 8 NJIT in a 7 p.m. quarterfinal on Friday.

"We played a very good second half," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "Ty, Rose and China all had big games. Winning the ASUN regular season championship was one of our goals, and it feels good to get that accomplished."

Julien (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Treasure Coast HS) finished 9-for-14 from the field, including a 5-for-8 performance from 3-point range. She added three rebounds and two assists, and she eclipsed 800 career points with a layup early in the fourth quarter. The senior now has four straight games with at least 15 points and has recorded double figures in 23 of 31 games this year. In fact, she also started her 66th game in the Green and Blue, which ties her for the 10th most in program history.

Tytionia Adderly, meanwhile, finished second on the team in scoring with 15 points while pulling down a game-high eight rebounds. She also had team-high's with three steals and two blocks. She finished 6-for-11 from the field and is now averaging 18 points and 10.5 rebounds against the Hatters this year.

In addition to that, Adderly (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) broke the program's single season rebound record in the Division-I era on Saturday. She entered the game tied with Sarah Hansen (256, 2012-13) and now has 264. She has the third most in a single season overall behind Robyn Swain (320 in 2002-03 and 2003-04), who accomplished her totals prior to the Division-I era. On the down side, she had her five-game streak of 10 or more rebounds snapped against Stetson.

China Dow (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy of Louisville) added 14 points, seven rebounds and two assists. She went 5-for-7 from the field and 2-for-4 from 3-point range. Her scoring output pushed her NCAA career total to 997, and she can become the second player on this year's team along with Taylor Gradinjan to reach the 1,000 point plateau in the ASUN quarterfinal against NJIT.

Nasrin Ulel (Murrietta, Calif./Murrietta HS) was the fourth and final player to reach double figures as the sophomore contributed 10 points, three rebounds and two steals. She was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, 2-for-2 from 3-point range and 2-for-2 from the foul line. Two of her rebounds came on the offensive glass, and she has now reached double figures in three straight and four of the past five.

Outside of those four, Lisa Zderadicka (Vienna, Austria/HAK Korneuburg) had five points, and Gradinjan (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy HS) had three points. Erica Nelson (Kansas City, Mo./Lee Summit North HS) also produced two points, a team-high five assists and a block in her return after missing almost two full games due to injury.

Gradinjan, who is the program's all-time leader in games played, is now 288-for-779 from 3-point range in her career. She remains in third place in program history in both categories behind second-place Whitney Knight (294-for-791). Additionally, she is now five made field goals shy of passing Stephanie Haas (413, 2012-16) for fifth all-time. With Saturday's game, she moved into second place in career minutes by passing DyTiesha Dunson (3,621, 2012-16). Sarah Hansen (3,877, 2009-14) tops the list.

As a team, the Eagles forced 24 turnovers, which ties a team season-high for forced giveaways against Division-I opponents. The other three games were Jan. 20 against Kennesaw State and both games against NJIT on Jan. 13 and Feb. 12. With Saturday's performance, FGCU also moved to 27-0 this season when forcing at least 15 in a game.

With the victory, FGCU has not lost in DeLand since Jan. 20, 2011 - a stretch of eight games. Overall, the Eagles are now 23-4 all-time against the Hatters, including a 10-2 record on the road.

On Saturday, FGCU finished 11-for-28 from 3-point range. In doing so, they accomplished two things.

First, the Eagles pushed their season total to 366 this year, which is just seven shy of the program record for most in a single season. The 2015-16 team holds the record with 372, and it took them 39 games - eight more games than this year's team so far.

3-Point Field Goals Made In A Single Season
1. 372 (39 games) - 2015-16
2. 366 (31 games) - 2017-18
3. 350 (32 games) - 2010-11
4. 347 (34 games) - 2013-14
5. 342 (32 games) - 2011-12

Also, with Julien's 3-pointer just 1:37 into the game, FGCU moved its streak of consecutive games with at least one 3-pointer to 400. That includes every game in the Division-I era, and the last time the Eagles did not hit a 3-pointer was in an 0-for-11 performance on Feb. 21, 2006 in a 72-59 win over Lynn University.

NOTES

FGCU has produced eight straight seasons with at least 25 wins. Entering today, they join UConn, Baylor and Notre Dame as one of only four schools to accomplish the feat thus far, while Stanford (19-9) and James Madison (18-8) also have a chance to join them.

Furthermore, with its 27 wins, FGCU is tied with Baylor (27-1) and Mercer (27-2) for the fifth most wins in the nation behind Mississippi State (29-0), UConn (28-0), Louisville (28-2) and Belmont (28-3).

FGCU received 25 votes in this week's USA Today Coaches Poll, which is the 27th most in the nation. In fact, they still have a decent chance to move back into the top-25 before the end of the regular season as they only sit eight votes behind No. 25 Mercer. Three weeks ago, the Eagles were ranked 25th, marking the first time the program had been ranked in one of the two major polls since March 2015.

The Green and Blue will open ASUN tournament play with a 15-0 record in Alico Arena this year. They are one of just three Division-I schools in the country to win at least 15 victories while being undefeated at home - joining Baylor and Mississippi State.

Stetson's Sydney Wagner, who is the reigning ASUN newcomer and freshmen of the week, was held scoreless against the FGCU defense. She has made four 3-pointers and scored 19 points in each of her team's two games last week. In fact, the Hatters came in with back-to-back games of 90 plus points before being held to 60 by the Eagles.

COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko rallied the 2016-17 Eagles to their seventh-straight 25-win campaign, which culminated in the team's fourth NCAA tournament appearance in six seasons of eligibility. The seven-time ASUN Coach of the Year was named the espnW Mid-Major Coach of the Year in 2015-16 following a run that witnessed the Eagles finish a best-ever 33-6. Over a five-year stretch starting in 2011-12, FGCU racked up four ASUN seasons with a perfect record and capped the run with back-to-back 30 plus win seasons. In 2014-15, the team earned its first top-25 ranking and another NCAA Tournament trip as a seven seed, where FGCU won its first ever NCAA Division-I Tournament game against No. 10 Oklahoma State. Including this year, Smesko has guided the Eagles to 14-straight 20-win seasons. He maintains a record of 431-86 (.834) at FGCU, including a 169-16 (.914) mark in ASUN play. Over the past six + seasons, he has guided FGCU to a 105-4 (.963) record in conference play with four undefeated seasons. Smesko earned his 400th career coaching win in 2014-15 in just 493 career games, two games faster than UConn's Geno Auriemma. He holds a career head coaching record of 492-113 (.813). Smesko ranks among an elite list of just four active Division I coaches with a career win percentage of .800 or higher, joining Auriemma, Baylor's Kim Mulkey and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer in the esteemed group.
