FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU women's basketball team (26-4, 12-1 ASUN) will look to clinch an outright ASUN regular season championship against Stetson University (17-12, 8-5 ASUN) on the road in the regular season finale Saturday at 1 p.m.
Aside from the championship, the Eagles will be looking to produce the team's 400th straight game with at least one 3-pointer made. They have also made at least one 3-pointer in all but one game in the program's history, and the only time they didn't was on Feb. 21, 2006 in a 72-59 win over Lynn University in which the Green and Blue went 0-for-11 from 3-point range.
THE GREEN AND BLUE
FGCU, who has already clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming ASUN tournament, enters Saturday's game having won six straight, 17 of the past 18 and 21 of the past 23 games. In terms of other streaks, the Green and Blue has won seven straight in DeLand. The last loss there occurred Jan. 20, 2011, and one of the wins during the streak came on March 8, 2014 when
Stephanie Haas hit a pair of free throws with 0.2 seconds left.
The Eagles, who had their streak of three straight games with 88 or more points snapped in the 78-51 win over Kennesaw State on Monday, have now produced eight straight seasons with at least 25 wins. They joined UConn (27-0), Baylor (26-1) and Notre Dame (26-2) as one of only four schools to accomplish the feat thus far, while Stanford (19-9) and James Madison (18-8) also have a chance to join them.
In fact, with 26 wins, FGCU is tied for the fifth most in the nation with Notre Dame (26-2), Baylor (26-1) and Mercer (26-2). The teams ahead of them include Mississippi State (29-0), Louisville (28-2), UConn (27-0) and Belmont (27-3).
This year's success has been, in large part, due to what will likely become the most prolific 3-point shooting team in program history. FGCU has made 355 3-pointers over 30 games this year, which is already the second most in a single season. On Monday, they passed the 2013-14 team (347) and the 2010-11 team (350). The 2015-16 team holds the top spot with 372, but they did so in 39 games. In fact, this year's team has currently played at least one fewer game than any other team in the top 10.
3-Point Field Goals Made In A Single Season
1. 372 (39 games) - 2015-16
2. 355 (30 games) - 2017-18
3. 350 (32 games) - 2010-11
4. 347 (34 games) - 2013-14
5. 342 (32 games) - 2011-12
6. 338 (35 games) - 2016-17
6. 338 (34 games) - 2006-07
8. 327 (34 games) - 2014-15
9. 319 (34 games) - 2012-13
10. 317 (31 games) - 2009-10
Also, in terms of single season records,
Tytionia Adderly has tied
Sarah Hansen (256, 2012-13) for the most rebounds in a single season by any player in the program's Division-I era (2007-present). The sophomore forward, who had 255 as a freshman over 35 games, already has 256 over 28 this year. She is currently tied for the third most in a single season overall behind
Robyn Swain (320 in 2002-03 and 2003-04).
In addition to her season total,
Adderly (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) has five straight games with double-digit rebounding totals. She has recorded nine career double-doubles, including two over the past four games, and 27 games with double-digit rebounds.
FGCU received 25 votes in this week's USA Today Coaches Poll, which is the 27th most in the nation. In fact, they still have a decent chance to move back into the top-25 before the end of the regular season as they only sit eight votes behind No. 25 Mercer. Three weeks ago, the Eagles were ranked 25th, marking the first time the program had been ranked in one of the two major polls since March 2015.
With her 15 points in Monday's win over Kennesaw State,
China Dow has now compiled 639 points in an FGCU uniform and 983 in her NCAA career. She is averaging a career-high 11.2 points per game this year and eclipsed 500 career rebounds (510) two games ago. Should she reach 1,000 points, Dow would join
Taylor Gradinjan as one of two players on this year's team to accomplish the feat.
Gradinjan (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy HS), who recently became the program's all-time leader in games played by breaking a tie with
Jaime Gluesing (140, 2012-16), also has the second most starts of all-time with 120 behind
Sarah Hansen (131, 2009-14).
In addition to those records, Gradinjan is third all-time in 3-point field goals made (287) and attempted (773). She sits behind
Whitney Knight (294-for-791, 2011-16) in both categories. In terms of total field goals, she is 408-for-1017 in her career. Those totals make her sixth in field goals made and fifth in attempts. She is six made field goals shy of passing
Stephanie Haas (413, 2012-16) for fifth place, and she is 57 shy of
Kaneisha Atwater (1,073, 2013-16) for the fourth most attempts.
Furthermore, Gradinjan has now played 3,605 minutes, sitting 17 shy of passing
DyTiesha Dunson (3,621, 2012-16) for second.
Sarah Hansen (3,877, 2009-14) remains the all-time leader.
In terms of career rebounds, Gradinjan (476) has some company on the current roster with Adderly, who is up to 511 after another double-digit performance. The duo is sixth and eighth all-time in total rebounds as Adderly passed
Kaneisha Atwater's (508, 2013-16) seventh place total on Monday. She remains on pace to become the program's first to 1,000 career rebounds.
Sarah Hansen (887, 2009-14) is the all-time leader.
Adderly also has 214 career offensive rebounds, which is fourth all-time behind
Robyn Swain (236, 2002-04) and
Adrianne McNally (240, 2006-10).
Sarah Hansen (329, 2009-14) is the program's all-time leader in that category as well.
Jessica Cattani (Muskego, Wis./Muskego HS), who leads the ASUN in 3-point field goal percentage at 45.3 percent (48-for-106), has made six 3-pointers in two of the past three games. Her 48 made 3-point field goals is the eighth most among all ASUN players, and she has pushed her career total to 106, which is 10 shy of passing
Megan Jones (115, 2002-05) and moving into the top 10 all-time in career 3-point field goals made in program history.
Rosemarie Julien has at least 15 points in three straight games, and she has tallied double digits in 22 of 30 games this year. In just 65 career games since transferring from Chipola College,
Julien (Port. St. Lucie, Fla./Treasure Coast HS) has scored 783 points, which gives her the 14th most career points in program history. She is one start shy of moving into the top 10 for most in program history, and she is tied for the eighth best career field goal percentage (.459, 272-for-592) - just one spot behind
China Dow (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy of Louisville), who is 229-for-493 (.465). Also, she sits seventh all-time in career scoring average at 12.0 PPG.
FGCU, who has compiled a 26-0 record this year when forcing at least 15 turnovers, are 15-0 in Alico Arena this year. They are one of just three Division-I schools in the country to win at least 15 while being undefeated at home - joining Baylor and Mississippi State.
SCOUTING STETSON
Stetson (17-12, 8-5 ASUN) is, perhaps, playing its best basketball of the season. The Hatters have scored 90 or more points in each of their past two games - picking up a 96-53 win over Kennesaw State and a 91-71 win over Lipscomb. They shot 57.5 and 50 percent in those two games from the field overall.
Sydney Wagner, who is the reigning ASUN newcomer and freshmen of the week, made four 3-pointers and scored 19 points in each game. Two more freshmen, Shania Meertens and Michelle Pruitt, are also averaging 15 points over the past two games.
Stetson has already clinched the No. 3 seed in the ASUN tournament, but will have to wait to find out its opponent until Saturday's slate of games is over. They do know that they will face North Florida if the Ospreys lose to Jacksonville and USC Upstate defeats NJIT. If UNF wins or USC Upstate loses, the Hatters will face USC Upstate in the quarterfinal.
Brittney Chambers, who ranks among the ASUN's top 10 in PPG, free throws made, free throw percentage, field goals made and rebounds per game, is only nine points shy of becoming the sixth player in program history with 500 points in a season.
Jordan Tully (6) and Megan Vincent (5) have helped the Hatters combine for 16 blocks over the past two games. Vincent leads the ASUN in blocks with 47, while Tully ranks fourth with 25. Meanwhile, Michelle Pruitt leads the ASUN in field goal percentage in conference games alone at .574. She is shooting 63 percent from the field over the past eight games.
Stetson is 11-2 at home this year while averaging 72.7 points and shooting 45.3 percent from the field. In those games, Chambers is averaging 18.3 points while McKenna Beach is averaging 13.7 points. In fact, Beach is the reigning ASUN player of the week after averaging 17 points, four rebounds and 5.5 assists per game last week.
SERIES HISTORY
FGCU is 22-4 all-time against Stetson, including an 80-40 win on Jan. 6. The Eagles hold a 9-2 record on the road.
ASUN CHAMPIONSHIP SEEDING SCENARIOS
FGCU (12-1 ASUN) has already clinched the No. 1 seed and home court advantage throughout the tournament, while Jacksonville (11-2) and Stetson (8-5) have clinched the second and third seeds. Kennesaw State (3-10) and NJIT (2-11) are locked in as the seventh and eighth seeds.
Lipscomb (6-7), North Florida (5-8) and USC Upstate (5-8) are still battling for the 4-6 seeds.
Also, due to its intended departure from the ASUN for the Big South beginning in 2018-19, the conference has removed USC Upstate from consideration for hosting any tournament games this year.
ASUN TEAM LEADERS
As a team, FGCU leads the ASUN in assist/turnover ratio (1.38), assists (495), assists per game (16.5), fewest turnovers (359), field goal percentage (43.5), scoring margin (18.5), scoring offense (77.8), steals (285), steals per game (9.5), 3-point field goals attempted (1,004), 3-point field goals made (355), 3-point field goals per game (11.8), 3-point field goal percentage (35.4), turnover margin (7.07) turnovers forced (19.03), fewest turnovers per game (12.0) and win-loss percentage (86.7).

COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko rallied the 2016-17 Eagles to their seventh-straight 25-win campaign, which culminated in the team's fourth NCAA tournament appearance in six seasons of eligibility. The seven-time ASUN Coach of the Year was named the espnW Mid-Major Coach of the Year in 2015-16 following a run that witnessed the Eagles finish a best-ever 33-6. Over a five-year stretch starting in 2011-12, FGCU racked up four ASUN seasons with a perfect record and capped the run with back-to-back 30 plus win seasons. In 2014-15, the team earned its first top-25 ranking and another NCAA Tournament trip as a seven seed, where FGCU won its first ever NCAA Division-I Tournament game against No. 10 Oklahoma State. Including this year, Smesko has guided the Eagles to 14-straight 20-win seasons. He maintains a record of 430-86 (.833) at FGCU, including a 168-16 (.913) mark in ASUN play. Over the past six + seasons, he has guided FGCU to a 104-4 (.963) record in conference play with four undefeated seasons. Smesko earned his 400th career coaching win in 2014-15 in just 493 career games, two games faster than UConn's Geno Auriemma. He holds a career head coaching record of 491-113 (.813). Smesko ranks among an elite list of just four active Division I coaches with a career win percentage of .800 or higher, joining Auriemma, Baylor's Kim Mulkey and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer in the esteemed group.
