NEWARK, N.J. -
Jessica Cattani made a career-high six 3-pointers to pace the FGCU women's basketball team (24-4, 10-1 ASUN) with a game-high 18 points in an 89-43 win over NJIT on the road in the Wellness and Events Center on Monday.
The Eagles now have three regular season games remaining beginning with a home tilt against Lipscomb at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The team needs any combination of two wins or Jacksonville losses to clinch at least a share of the ASUN championship and home court advantage through the ASUN tournament.
"When we have this many people who can score, it's hard to key on one or two people," FGCU head coach
Karl Smesko said. "We want to share the ball. We want to get get everybody involved, and I thought we did a pretty good job of that tonight. I was happy with our effort on the defensive end. We got a lot of extra possessions getting offensive rebounds, especially Ty who was big for us."
Cattani (Muskego, Wis./Muskego HS) finished 6-for-8 from 3-point range while adding four rebounds, two assists and a steal. She topped her previous career-high of five 3-pointers that was set twice - on Dec. 30 against Florida Memorial and Jan. 13 against NJIT. Thus, she is now a combined 11-for-14 from long range against the Highlanders this year. Her scoring output was also a season-high against a Division-I opponent this season.
Four others also scored in double figures for the Eagles as
Rosemarie Julien tallied 17,
China Dow had 15,
Tytionia Adderly had 11 and
Chandler Ryan had 10. In fact, the top three scorers for FGCU combined for 50 points, which was seven more than NJIT's entire team.
Julien (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Treasure Coast HS) only played three minutes in the second half due to foul trouble and the score margin, but she finished 6-for-10 from the field and went 3-for-3 from the foul line. It was her ninth double-digit scoring effort over 11 conference games, and she now has 751 points in just 63 career games in an Eagle uniform.
Dow (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy of Louisville) went 6-for-9 from the field, including a 3-for-4 performance from 3-point range, and added three rebounds and two steals. The senior, who originally began her NCAA career at Middle Tennessee, now has 959 points.
Adderly (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) produced her ninth career double-double as the sophomore finished with 11 points, 16 rebounds (career-high 10 offensive) and three steals. She tied her season-high in rebounds and now has two straight and three double-doubles over the past five games. On top of that, she has 25 career double-digit rebounding efforts.
Ryan (Groveland, Ill./Morton HS) finished 3-for-6 from the field and recorded her fourth double-digit scoring effort of the season, including the second one in ASUN play. She did her damage in just 13 minutes.
Outside of those five, FGCU had five others reach the scoring column including
Nasrin Ulel (5),
Taylor Gradinjan (5),
Erica Nelson (4),
Alyssa Blair (2) and
Sheahen Dowling (2). Another player,
Lisa Zderadicka (Vienna, Austria/HAK Korneuburg) didn't score, but tallied five assists and two rebounds in 13 minutes.
Nelson (Kansas City, Mo./Lee Summit North HS) had a game-high seven assists along with two rebounds and a steal.
Blair (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie HS) scored on her lone field goal attempt and produced a steal.
Ulel (Murrietta, Calif./Murrietta HS) finished with four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Gradinjan (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy HS) added another 3-pointer to her career total and chipped in three assists.
Dowling (Chicago, Ill./Trinity HS) pulled down two rebounds while adding one assist and one steal in seven minutes.
FGCU finished 17-for-44 from 3-point range as a team, while NJIT attempted 45 field goals as a team. The Eagles also nearly made as many 3-pointers as the Highlanders attempted (19).
The Eagles had 13 steals, which was the team's third straight with at least 12, and they finished 32-for-69 from the field, which was nearly an identical finish to Saturday's 32-for-68 performance at USC Upstate. In fact, FGCU made 17 3-pointers for the second straight game and attempted just one more from long range than they did on Saturday.
The performance on Monday marked the 19th time this season the team has produced 10 or more made 3-pointers.
In terms of field goal percentage, Monday was FGCU's best performance against a Division-I team this year as NJIT finished just 13-for-45 from the field (.289) and scored the second fewest points (43) against the Eagles behind Stetson's 40-point effort on Jan. 6.
FGCU is now 24-0 this year when forcing at least 15 turnovers.
