Smesko Captures 500th, @FGCU_WBB Routs American 90-71 in Rainbow Wahine Finale

HONOLULU - The trio of Nasrin Ulel, Keri Jewett-Giles and Tytionia Adderly combined for 60 points to lead the FGCU women's basketball team (4-2) to a 90-71 win over American University (3-3) in the finale of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown at the Stan Sheriff Center on Sunday.

With the victory, head coach Karl Smesko secured his 500th career head coaching victory, which includes his time at Walsh University and IPFW. He achieved the milestone in just 616 games (500-116), and he has compiled a 439-90 record during his time at FGCU, including a 307-68 record in the Division-I era.

"This was our best performance of the season," Smesko said. "We earned a quality win against a very good team. It is a great way to finish a great trip."

Ulel (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta HS) tied her career-high with a game-high 28 points on 10-for-18 shooting, while adding team-highs in rebounds (6) and steals (4) along with three assists. Jewett-Giles (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar HS), who recorded her fifth straight game with at least 15 points, poured in all 22 of her points in the first half. She finished 7-for-11 from the field while adding three assists and two steals. Adderly (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) tied Ulel for the team-high in rebounds while adding a season-high 11 points. She finished 5-for-7 from the field.

With her team down 10-6 in the opening quarter, Ulel hit back-to-back 3-pointers to tie it at 12. Moments later, FGCU started a 16-4 run over the final four minutes. Alyssa Blair (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie HS) had a free throw, a steal and a fast break layup towards the end of the run, while Ulel converted a three-point play to give the Eagles a 30-19 lead.

American opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run, but the Green and Blue responded with an 11-1 run to take a 41-25 lead. Jewett-Giles capped the run with three consecutive 3-point field goals as FGCU eventually took an 11-point lead at the break.

In the second half, FGCU went on a 13-0 run that featured 3-point field goals from Adderly, Ulel, Lisa Zderadicka as the lead grew to 24 with 4:38 left in the third. From there, the Eagles led by as many as 26 and led by no fewer than 18.

Zderadicka (Vienna, Austria/HAK Korneuburg) and Destiny Washington-Mabon each added nine points, while Zderadicka had a season-high six assists, four rebounds and two steals. Washington-Mabon's (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North HS) scoring total was a new season-high, and she added five rebounds and two steals.

Jewett-Giles finished just one shy of her career-high of 23, which was set during her time at Southern Miss. Eight different players scored for the Eagles. Defensively, FGCU forced 25 turnovers, which led to 38 points going the other way.

Up Next
FGCU will be back in action on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Alico Arena against Houston.

Notes
With her six rebounds, Adderly is three rebounds shy of becoming the sixth player in program history with at least 600 career rebounds. She needs seven more to eclipse Courtney Chihil (603, 2008-12) for fifth-place all-time.

FGCU is now 4-2 all-time as a Division-I program while playing in the state of Hawaii.

The Green and Blue finished 16-for-41 from 3-point range. It was the team's fifth game with at least 10 this season.

The 90-point outing represented the third time this year FGCU has scored at least that many in a game.

COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko led the 2017-18 Eagles to another historic season. The Green and Blue finished 31-5 overall and 13-1 in ASUN play, capturing the program's eighth ASUN regular season championship and fifth ASUN tournament championship. The team finished the season ranked 25th in the final USA Today Coaches Poll, recaptured the NCAA record for most 3-point field goals made in a season with 431 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in seven seasons, where the Eagles knocked off 5th-seeded and No. 15 ranked Missouri in the opening round. It was the team's second tournament win over the past three appearances. Over the course of the season, FGCU knocked off three ranked teams - No. 15 Missouri, No. 20 Kentucky and No. 21 DePaul.

Over the past four seasons, Smesko has guided FGCU to three 30 plus win seasons while recording a 121-23 (.840) record overall. The now eight-time ASUN Coach of the Year rallied the 2016-17 team to its seventh straight 25-win campaign, culminating in an ASUN tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2015-16, he was named the espnW mid-major coach of the year following a run that witnessed the Eagles claim a WNIT runner-up finish and a Division-I program best ever 33-6 record. In 2014-15, the team achieved its first-ever top-25 ranking and made another trip to the NCAA Tournament, where the Eagles earned a No. 7 seed and won the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament game, toppling No. 10 seed Oklahoma State.

Including the 2017-18 campaign, Smesko has guided the Eagles to 14-straight 20-win seasons and eight-straight 25-win seasons. He maintains a record of 500-116 (.812) overall in his career, including a 170-16 (.914) mark in ASUN play. Over the past seven seasons, he has guided FGCU to a 106-4 (.964) record in conference play with four undefeated seasons. Smesko earned his 400th career coaching win in 2014-15 in just 493 career games, two games faster than UConn's Geno Auriemma. Entering 2016-17, he ranked among an elite list of just four active Division I coaches with a career win percentage of .800 or higher, joining Auriemma, Baylor's Kim Mulkey and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer in the esteemed group. Over the past year, first-year NCAA Division-I head coaches Nancy Fahey (Illinois) and Bart Brooks (Belmont) pushed the list to six.
