FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU volleyball team (11-5, 4-0 ASUN) will look for just the program's third-ever 6-0 start to ASUN play when they square off against Kennesaw State and Lipscomb this weekend – joining the 2012 team's 14-0 start and the 2008 team's 6-0 start.

The Friday night showdown against Kennesaw State (13-4, 4-0) is a rematch of last year's ASUN championship match in which the Owls won in three sets. Lipscomb, who won the previous three ASUN regular season championships, defeated FGCU in the 2016 ASUN title match.

RACE TO THE TOP
FGCU, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb and Liberty (7-10, 4-0) are all tied atop the ASUN standings, and they will all face each other this weekend. So, the next three days will play a crucial role in this season's championship race – especially as every other team has at least two losses in ASUN play.

SERIES HISTORY
The Eagles are 13-9 all-time against Kennesaw State, but the Owls have won six of the past eight. FGCU owns a 7-2 record in Alico Arena. Meanwhile, Lipscomb owns a 16-7 record against the Green and Blue, although FGCU has won the past two and three of the past five in the series.

NET PLAY KEY VS KENNESAW STATE
FGCU's defense has held opponents to a .127 hitting percentage this year, which ranks second in the nation. Meanwhile, they're hitting .258 as a team – 27th best in the nation. On the other side, Kennesaw State is holding opponents to a .156 hitting percentage, which is 23rd best in the nation, while hitting a 54th-best .246.

The Owls also have eight matches this year with at least 10 blocks. The middle duo of Quin Sutphin and Liesl Engelbrecht rank second and third, respectively, in the ASUN in total blocks. Engelbrecht is the first player in program history with over 300 career blocks.

ON A TEAR
Sharonda Pickering (Sea Cow's Bay, Tortola, British Virgin Islands/Elmore Stoutt HS) not only tops the conference in hitting percentage at .451 over 184 attempts, but the senior middle blocker is also second nationally in offensive efficiency. She has had two or fewer errors in all but one match this year. In matches where she's had at least 10 attempts, she has hit at least .304 in every one. Furthermore, she has raised her career hitting percentage to .402, which is just shy of Cara Ziegler's (.403, 2006-07) record. If she keeps up that pace, she will also finish her career atop the conference's all-time record book.

COACH BOTSFORD
Matt Botsford is in his fifth season as head coach of the FGCU women's volleyball program in 2018 after being hired on Feb. 10, 2014. In his four plus seasons, Botsford-led teams have compiled a 100-43 (.699) record overall, including a 46-14 (.767) record in ASUN play. He has taken the program to heights it has not seen in the Division-I era (2007-present) – registering at least 20 wins overall in three straight seasons and at least 10 wins in conference play four straight seasons. Furthermore, the team's offensive efficiency has drastically improved since Botsford started. In his first two seasons, his squad produced hitting percentages of .212 and .220. The past two, which have seen .267 and .256 percentages, are the third and fourth highest in program history. All four seasons under Botsford have seen a top-3 ASUN regular season finish and at least an ASUN semifinal appearance. His first two campaigns resulted in regular season runner-up finishes, and the past two have seen the Eagles advance to the tournament championship. On Sept. 10, 2016, Botsford led his team to a five-set win over Indiana in Alico Arena, which signified the program's first-ever win over a team from a Power-5 conference.
