LAST TIME OUT
With plenty of distractions surrounding the Eagles' trip to Tucson, the Green and Blue began the weekend on a high note. Despite being outshot by the host Arizona Wildcats,
Varin Ness (Sogndal, Norway Sogndal/Vidaregåande Skule/Carson Newman) supplied FGCU's goal in a 1-0 victory. The Eagles defense held firm throughout the match, led by 10 saves from
Melissa Weck (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS).
In Sunday's contest against Arizona State, the Eagles had multiple early chances to take the lead and gain control of the match. The Sun Devils were first to score, however, netting two goals in the second half.
Cassidy Morgan (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay HS) scored late in the match to bring FGCU to within 2-1, but the comeback would end there.
RACKING UP AWARDS
For her 10 saves against the Wildcats and three more against the Sun Devils, Weck was named the ASUN's Defensive Player of the Week. The sophomore won the award for the second time in her career, earning the honor following a double-digit save effort against Alabama last season.
Lindsey Patton (Jacksonville, Fla./Oakleaf HS),
Marjorie Boilesen (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Porto Seguro/West Florida), and
Holly Fritz (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner HS/Florida State) have also been honored by the ASUN this season.
INCOMING CLASS RECEIVES PRAISE
The 13 newcomers brought in by head coach
Jim Blankenship ranks among the best incoming classes in the United States. According to a frequent researcher and respected soccer-community member, FGCU has the 17th-best incoming class across all Division I programs. This class, according to Soccerhunter on BigSoccer.com, has FGCU in front on programs such as Florida, Wake Forest, and USF.
The newcomers have already made an impact tallying 12 goals and seven assists through eight matches this season.
REGIONAL RANKINGS
Following a 1-1 weekend against PAC 12 foes, the Eagles sit 12th in the United Soccer Coaches Association Southeast Region alongside the likes of South Carolina, Florida, UCF, Alabama, and Arkansas. FGCU currently has not received a vote in the national poll.
EAGLES RECOGNIZED BY HERO SPORTS
While FGCU is flying under the radar in the United Soccer Coaches' Poll, Hero Sports has the Eagles at #38 in their latest poll, ahead of undefeated Tennessee. In addition, Hero Sports also has the Green and Blue 70th in their RPI.
THE WARRIORS
Webber International is also feeling the impact of Irma, with four matches canceled before finally stepping back on the field Saturday against Florida College. The Warriors are 2-0 this year, with Monday's contest counting as an exhibition. Rachel Osborne became the second Warrior to net a pair of goals this year after Madison Pike did the same to open the year.
Sarah McKinney has yet to allow a goal this year in net.
FGCU and Webber International have not met during the regular season.
