Rivera Joins 200-RBI Club as @FGCU_Baseball Completes Sweep at NJIT

Nick Rivera became the 11th member of the ASUN's illustrious 200-RBI club Sunday afternoon

NEWARK, N.J. – Coming off an offensive explosion in Saturday's series-clinching win, FGCU (31-16, 7-8 ASUN) maintained its momentum and completed a weekend sweep against NJIT (4-34, 0-15 ASUN) with a 10-6 win Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

FGCU capped off the three-game series against the Highlanders with 37 runs on 47 hits, including 22 for extra bases. The team's 37 runs in a three-game series are the most since scoring 47 runs at Northern Kentucky in 2014. Additionally, its 47 hits are the most since registering 50 hits in three games at USC Upstate last season.

Sunday's win not only marks the first time FGCU has registered 10 or more runs in back-to-back games since Mar. 10-11 versus Ohio State, but is also the first time this season the Eagles have turned in double digit hits in three straight contests.

The Eagles led from start to finish for the second straight day after jumping out to an 8-0 lead behind a five-run third inning and three-run fourth. Dating back to the last two innings of Friday's dramatic win, FGCU had scored in 13 of its last 15 innings played.

Redshirt senior Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) highlighted the day by becoming the 11th member in the 39-year history of the ASUN to record 200 or more RBI. With four RBI in Sunday's finale and nine in the series, Rivera stands alone in 10th place on the ASUN's all-time list and is 12 RBI shy of cracking the top-five.

"We came in here and did what we needed to do," said FGCU head coach Dave Tollett. "We challenged the guys earlier in the week, and they certainly responded. It's nice to get back in the win column, but there's still more work to do. We have two more midweeks and a couple of very important conference series left, and we're going to take it a game at a time."

FGCU got on the scoreboard and began the blow things open with five straight extra-base hits to start the top of the third inning. After Marc Coffers (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) led off the frame with a double down the left-field line, Spencer Levine (Miami, Fla./Seminole State College/Miami Killian Senior HS) and Julio Gonzalez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Seminole State College (OK)/Brito Miami Private HS) followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to give the Green and Blue the early lead. Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County HS) then hit a RBI triple down the right-field line, and Rivera followed with his second home run in as many games to extend the lead to 5-0. With 12 home runs this season, Rivera is now tied with Taylor Allum of Kennesaw State for the ASUN lead in the category. Additionally, he now has 38 home runs in his career and is three shy of tying Zach Maxfield's career record.

The following inning, FGCU continued to slug away as Levine made the Highlanders pay for a fielding miscue with a two-run homer to left field – his fourth of the season and the Eagles ninth in the last two days. With the bases loaded and one out, Eli Lovell (Lincoln, Neb./Kansas City Kansas CC/Lincoln Southwest HS) extended the lead to 8-0 with a sacrifice fly to center field.

NJIT got on the scoreboard with a two-RBI double from Michael Anastasia in the bottom of the fifth inning, but FGCU responded in its next at-bat as Rivera became the conference's newest member of the 200-RBI club with a double down the right-field line – the 69th of his illustrious career.

NJIT wouldn't go away quietly, though, as the Highlanders scored two runs in the seventh and ninth innings to make things interesting. However, it was too little, too late as FGCU's early lead was too much to overcome for the home team.

Rivera capped off FGCU's scoring for the day with a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the eighth inning. The sacrifice fly marked his fourth RBI of the game and 201st of his career.

Offensively, FGCU wrapped up the series with a .382 average and .724 slugging percentage. Gonzalez and Levine each recorded three hits in the finale, while Levine added four runs, two doubles and three RBI to his aforementioned homer. Rivera and Gonzalez capped off the weekend with multiple hits in all three games.

Senior right hander Garrett Anderson (4-1, 3.45) earned the win for the Green and Blue after allowing two runs on six hits in 5.0 innings pitched. Peyton Gray (Columbus, Ind./Gulf Coast State/Columbus East HS) and Sterling Koerner (Fort Pierce, Fla./John Carroll HS) each turned in a scoreless inning of relief.

UP NEXT
FGCU heads to Tampa, Fla., for a midweek matchup with #26 USF (33-10) Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Earlier this season, the Eagles claimed a dramatic, 2-1, win against the Bulls behind Levine's solo home run.
