SORRENTO, Fla. – FGCU's
Madeline Marck-Sherk continued to shine on Day 2 of the MSU Citrus Classic and leads the entire 84-player field with back-to-back rounds of 71 for a total score of 142 (-2). As a unit, the Eagles remain in second place after rounds of 300 and 304 for a 28-over total score of 604.
"We were so close to playing well today. Too many putts on greens and a couple of course management decisions cost us. We talked about these after the round and know that we need to improve upon certain things if we want to contend tomorrow. I'm so proud of Madeline. She's playing awesome golf right now. Today on hole 18, she hit one of the best shots I've seen in my years of coaching.
Megan (Blonien) is playing very solid as well and
Kelsy (
Holbert) is just one shot out of the top-10. I think tomorrow we have a good chance to be in contention as a team and also have some individuals shine.
FGCU is hot on the tail of Murray State, which leads the pack with a total score of 601 thanks to a stellar second round score of 295. Day 1 leader Texas A&M Corpus Christi fell to third after shooting 311 in today's round. Jacksonville St. and Akron round out the top five and will be battling for a tournament crown tomorrow when the third round commences.
Blonien (Altus, Okla./Altus HS) finished just behind Marck-Sherk (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway Crystal Beach HS) in the Eagles lineup with a plus-3 total of 147 after rounds of 73 and 74. Her impressive score has her tied for fifth in the field. Holbert (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner HS) added a couple of shots to yesterday's 73. Her second round score of 78 has her tied for 11th in the field with a total of 151.
Playing as an individual,
Madison Easterbrook (Burlington, Ontario/Aldershot HS) is near the middle of the pack. Her total score of 157 (+12) after two rounds has her tied for 39th in the field.
Freshman
Ailsa Clark (Navarre, Fla./Navarre HS) and
Kate Williamson (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy HS) each shaved shots off yesterday's score with rounds of 81. For Clark who carded 83 yesterday, this ties her for 62nd with a total score of 164. Williamson is two shots behind after recording an 85 in her first round.

COACH TREW
Head coach
Sarah Trew recently is currently in her 6th season at the helm of the FGCU women's golf team after being named ASUN Coach of the Year in 2016. Trew took over in 2011 and has since guided the Eagles to the program's best-ever finish in the ASUN Tournament and to 20 top-10 finishes. The 2013-14 squad set a new single-season scoring record with a team average of 307.88, while also setting a new benchmark academically. The spring of 2015 saw the Eagles again take third place at the ASUN Championship, and recording their best team score of the season while 2016 again set a new standard. The 2015-16 squad recorded a new program best with a 305.29 average and took a second-place finish at the conference tournament. In that event, the Eagles carded a team score of 290 to set the program's new record and earned the top finish in program history.
