Cattani Scores Career-High 23, @FGCU_WBB's Defense Stifles Florida Memorial In 82-43 Win

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Jessica Cattani scored a career-high 23 points to lead the FGCU women's basketball team to an 82-43 win over Florida Memorial in Alico Arena on Saturday.

The victory completes the non-conference season for FGCU (14-3), who will host Stetson at 4 p.m. next Saturday to open ASUN play. The Eagles entered play on Saturday ranked No. 24 in the latest NCAA RPI poll. They have a chance to move up in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll following a win over No. 2 South Dakota State on Friday and No. 1 Green Bay's loss to Northern Kentucky on Saturday.

"We got off to a really good start," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "It allowed us to play more people and get a chance to look at some kids who haven't got a lot of playing time. I saw some really positive things, especially on the defensive end."

Cattani (Muskego, Wis./Muskego HS) came off the bench to finish 9-for-11 from the field, including a 5-for-7 performance from 3-point range, while adding three rebounds and an assist. Her scoring output topped her previous career-high of 21, which she produced twice - including Dec. 10 of this season against Ave Maria. Additionally, she set a new career high for field goals made and 3-point field goals made, and she eclipsed 400 career points. She now sits at 405.

Erica Nelson (Kansas City, Mo./Lee Summit North HS) added 16 points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist. She went 5-for-9 from the field and 5-for-5 from the free throw line. It was her third double-digit scoring effort of the season.

Tytionia Adderly (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) added eight points, 12 rebounds, three assists and a steal in just 20 minutes of action. It was her seventh double-digit rebounding effort this year, and it was the fourth time she's missed a double-double by either two points or two rebounds.

Another standout was Chandler Ryan (Groveland, Ill./Morton HS), who tallied a career-high six assists in 18 minutes off the bench. The redshirt freshman added four points and two steals. Lisa Zderadicka (Vienna, Austria/HAK Korneuburg), who made her first start of the season, added five points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Nasrin Ulel (Murrietta, Calif./Murrietta HS) finished with a season-high three steals to go along with seven points, two rebounds, two assists and the lone block for the Eagles.

Defensively, FGCU held Florida Memorial without a field goal for the first 14 minutes of the game.

All 11 players who played for FGCU scored at least two points and had at least one rebound. 10 of the 11 had at least one made field goal. The Eagles have now won four straight and eight of the past nine.

COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko rallied the 2016-17 Eagles to their seventh-straight 25-win campaign, which culminated in the team's fourth NCAA tournament appearance in six seasons of eligibility. The seven-time ASUN Coach of the Year was named the espnW Mid-Major Coach of the Year in 2015-16 following a run that witnessed the Eagles finish a best-ever 33-6. Over a five-year stretch starting in 2011-12, FGCU racked up four ASUN seasons with a perfect record and capped the run with back-to-back 30 plus win seasons. In 2014-15, the team earned its first top-25 ranking and another NCAA Tournament trip as a seven seed, where FGCU won its first ever NCAA Division-I Tournament game against No. 10 Oklahoma State. With 26 wins in 2016-17, Smesko has guided the Eagles to 13-straight 20-win seasons.  He maintains a record of 418-85 (.831) at FGCU, including a 160-15 (.914) mark in ASUN play. Over the past six seasons, he has guided FGCU to a 93-3 (.969) record in conference play. Smesko earned his 400th career coaching win in 2014-15 in just 493 career games, two games faster than UConn's Geno Auriemma. He holds a career head coaching record of 479-112 (.810). Smesko ranks among an elite list of just four active Division I coaches with a career win percentage of .800 or higher, joining Auriemma, Baylor's Kim Mulkey and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer in the esteemed group.
