SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The FGCU volleyball team (19-8, 9-3 ASUN) had four players record double-doubles en route to a 21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-18 win over USC Upstate (8-18, 4-8 ASUN) on the road Sunday.
The stat-stuffed match saw
Snowy Burnam,
Cortney VanLiew and
Amanda Carroll each produce double-doubles in kills and digs, while
Maggie Rick had the fourth in assists and digs.
Courtney Stephens added a career-high in digs, and Rick totaled a season-high in assists and digs.
Due to those performances, FGCU was able to overcome .159 and .102 hitting percentages, respectively, in the first and fourth sets. They hit .215 as a team.
"Like the last set on Friday, we saw what happens when you are careless with the ball as an attacker," FGCU head coach
Matt Botsford said. "We need to play smarter and our hitters have to continue to develop their game management skills out there."
Burnam (Palm City, Fla./Jensen Beach HS) recorded season-highs in kills (17) and digs (17) while hitting .378 and tallying one solo block. It was the fifth straight match with double-digit kills for the freshman, and it was her second double-double of the season. On top of that, her four highest dig outputs of the season have occurred over the past four matches.
"Snowy was great again today," Botsford said. "She continues to be such a dependable player within the offense. Maggie used her well in this match and that connection got us through some tough spots."
VanLiew (Seymour, Ind./Columbus East HS) tallied her sixth double-double of the season with 14 kills, 12 digs and one block assist. It was her ninth match this year with at least 10 digs, and three of those have come in the past four outings. She also has at least 10 kills in 18 of 27 matches and sits just 15 kills away from the 300 plateau.
Carroll (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) didn't enter today's match until the second set, but still produced her fourth straight double-double with 10 kills, 13 digs, three block assists and two assists. She is averaging nearly 16 kills and 16 digs since Oct. 21.
Rick (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity Catholic HS) finished with season-highs in assists (60) and digs (13) while adding two kills. It was her fourth career match with at least 60 helpers and seven shy of her career-high of 67 set on Sept. 25, 2015 against Georgia Southern. The dig total fell just one shy of her career-high, and her double-double was the first of the season and ninth of her career. Additionally, she now has five straight matches with at least 40 assists.
Outside of those four, the offense was aided by
Daniele Serrano, who finished with nine kills, three block assists, two digs and one solo block, and
Giovanna Borgiotti, who had eight kills and three digs.
Serrano (Sanford, Fla./Seminole HS) now has 156 career block assists, which is four shy of passing Lauren Tutwiler (159, 2014-15) for seventh most all-time.
Borgiotti (Vienna, Va./George C. Marshall HS) had seven of her eight kills in the opening set and averaged 11 kills per match this weekend.
Defensively,
Stephens (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) boosted the team with a career-high 23 digs. It topped her previous high of 21 from Sept. 20, 2016 against FIU, and it was her fourth career match with at least 20. Her previous season-high was 18 against North Florida on Oct. 27, and she is now averaging nearly 14 digs over the past four matches.
"Courtney did a really good job on the defensive end for us and sparked some things coming out of the break," Botsford said.
One streak that did end on Sunday was 11 successive matches with at least 10 digs for
Karissa Rhoades (Valrico, Fla./Bloomingdale Senior HS). She finished with eight, but was outdone by the quintuple in double figures.
Other contributors in the win included
Kaitlan Krivdo (Hope Mills, N.C./Grays Creek HS), who had six kills, three digs and one block assist, and
Alayna Ryan (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS), who had three digs and one service ace.
The Eagles are now 19-0 all-time against USC Upstate, including a 9-0 record on the road. Overall, FGCU finished its regular season road schedule at 7-4 this year.
FGCU will conclude its regular season next weekend at home against Lipscomb on Friday and Kennesaw State on Saturday. Both matches are at 7 p.m.
