Depth Carries @FGCU_VB Past USC Upstate In Straight Sets

Burnam, Stephens Record New Season-Highs In Kills, Digs

FORT MYERS, Fla.---Snowy Burnam recorded a season-high 11 kills while the FGCU volleyball team had three players record double digits in kills and digs in a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-18, 25-19) over USC Upstate in Alico Arena on Friday.

With the win, not only did FGCU (11-6, 3-1 ASUN) improve to 18-0 all-time against the Spartans (5-12, 2-2 ASUN), but the Eagles also became the first to 11 wins in the ASUN this year. Jacksonville is second with 10 and leads the conference with a 4-0 record in ASUN play. FGCU, which is now tied with Kennesaw State for second place in the ASUN standings, has also won four of five entering Saturday's matchup against NJIT, and the Eagles are 4-0 all-time against the Highlanders.

Burnam (Palm City, Fla./Jensen Beach HS) recorded double digit kills for the first time in her 13th collegiate match. She has either tied or recorded a new season-high in three straight matches. Against USC Upstate, Burnam also recorded a new season-high in hitting percentage (.667) over 15 attempts.

Amanda Carroll (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS), who was honored prior to the match for becoming just the third player in FGCU volleyball history to record 1,000 career kills, totaled a match-high 15 kills and inched closer to Brooke Youngquist Sweat's all-time kills record. Carroll (1,159 kills) is now just nine short of passing Youngquist Sweat, who had 1,167 kills from 2004-07. Against USC Upstate, Carroll also hit .306 and totaled 10 digs and four block assists. It was her seventh double-double of the season and the 33rd of her career. On top of that, she is now alone in 10th place on the career list for total blocks.

Daniele Serrano (Sanford, Fla./Seminole HS) recorded 10 kills to become the third player on Friday with at least 10 kills. It was her fifth match with 10 or more this year. She also hit .421, which was the 10th time she had at least a .400 percentage in a match this year.

Defensively, Karissa Rhoades had a match-high 17 digs, while Courtney Stephens had 12. Carroll was the third in that trio to record double digits. For Rhoades (Valrico, Fla./Bloomingdale Senior HS), it was the 15th match of the season with at least 10 digs for the junior. Stephens (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS), meanwhile, notched a new season-high - topping her total of 10 against FAU on Sept. 2. At the net, Carroll's four block assists led the team, but Kaitlan Krivdo (Hope Mills, N.C./Grays Creek HS) finished second with three.

Cortney VanLiew (Seymour, Ind./Columbus East HS) not only finished fourth on the team with five digs, but she teamed with Rhoades to record the team's lone two service aces. Maggie Rick (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity Catholic HS) not only tallied a match-high 37 assists, but tied her season-high in kills with six. She did so at a .444 clip, and she also has at least 27 assists in every match this year. Rhoades finished second in assists on Friday with six.

Additionally, with Rick, the junior setter is now just six assists away from moving past Chandra Lefever (2006-07, 09) for second place on the career list, which is topped by Gigi Meyer (2011-14) with 4,408. Stephens, too, is moving on up. The senior needs seven more digs to move past Meyer (947, 2011-14) for fifth place on the career list.

As a team, FGCU hit .333 over 105 attempts. After hitting a season-low .096 against Kennesaw State, the Eagles have now hit at least .316 in each of the past two matches. It was also the team's sixth match this year hitting at least .300, and it was the third highest among those six.

FGCU opened the match with three consecutive points, anchored by a pair of kills from Carroll and Serrano. The lead remained at three until the Eagles reeled off four straight to take a 12-5 advantage. Serrano recorded two kills during the run. From there, the lead ballooned to as many as nine before a Spartan service error gave FGCU a 25-17 win.

In the second set, USC Upstate scored the first three points and didn't relinquish the lead until kills from Serrano and Rick started a run where FGCU scored six of seven points to take a 15-11 lead. Burnam capped the run with a kill, but USC Upstate rallied to trim its deficit to two on a pair of occasions, the second of which came at 18-16. FGCU closed on a 7-2 run, though, as the Eagles produced the set's final three points on two kills from Carroll and a set-winning kill from Burnam to capture a 25-18 win.

Despite FGCU taking an 8-5 lead to start the final set, the two teams went back and forth for a while, which resulted in things being knotted at 11 apiece. Carroll then picked up a pair of kills sandwiched around her teaming up with Krivdo for a block that put FGCU up 14-11. USC Upstate's Montana Swanson later sent down a kill to pull her team within one, which forced an FGCU timeout. The Eagles then closed the match with five straight on three kills, an ace and a block to win 25-19.

FGCU will now face NJIT (9-10, 1-3 ASUN) at 6 p.m. in Alico Arena on Saturday. The Highlanders fell in five sets at Stetson on Friday.
